We are considering a move to Utah. We want to get closer to my wifes family in Southern California, but no way we would move there. We are in our mid 50's and I love to fish, mostly from a boat. I read that Lindon Utah (and area) is a nice and most importantly safe area? Employment not an issue, I work from home and have a secure job, but I am raising two young Grand daughters, so school and future opportunity is important.
Bottom line questions:
Good place to raise kids and safe?
Somewhere I could hook up a boat and fish nearby?
Things to do as a family?
Is Utah a good choice to live?
We obviously will retire where we end up this time.

Coming from Oklahoma City area, (transferred here) and don't like the violent crime that is getting worse by the day. Weather is terrible as well. Any help on where to buy is appreciated. We can live anywhere, but want a safe decent area. Thanks in advance.

It may have been that way at some time, but I've been here for 10 years. This state is near the bottom for education, near the bottom in child welfare when it to comes to safety for children, very crooked politics, terrible weather, and I don't like it at all. And the crime here is terrible. Been getting worse with home invasions and murders nearly a daily occurrence. I know everywhere has it's problems, but Oklahoma City area and Tulsa Areas to me are very bad places to live. I definitely would not recommend living or raising a family here. Anyway, that's just my opinion and I appreciate everybody's. But I am very curious to know about the area I asked about. Thank you

Consider Stansbury Park. It's a 20-25 minute drive to the airport from here. 10 minutes south to Tooele which has Walmart, Home Depot, grocery stores, etc. It's a great community built around a lake. There are some lake side lots available occasionally. So you could fish from your backyard. There was a hard winter last year that killed a lot of fish, but they restocked it. It may not be what you are looking for, but just thought I'd mention it.

The lake is electric motors only and catch and release. It's very scenic. Mountains all around and a small town feel. Not sure about the schools as our kids are grown.

If you want a new house on the lake, Northport is developing the last few lots on the lake. Walker Homes is the builder. Street is in and houses should start going up this summer.

Thank you for the reply, I appreciate it. I will definitely look into Stansbury Park.

I have read about the air quality being a concern in some area's? Is this a problem all over or in this area?

We do get the inversion in Tooele county, but it is not as bad as SLC.

We moved from Wichita, KS so very familiar with OKC. We love it here.

A few pics of the lake from last summer ....

An aerial view of Stansbury Park .... There are lots of neighborhoods around the lake. Prices range from $175K to $500K, depending on what you want and if you are water front. There is a community pool, playgrounds, tennis courts, clubhouse, and a very nice golf course.

Depending on what your price range is and how close you want to be to town or the outdoors, there are a lot of options. Utah County in general is a pretty safe place to live; Orem calls itself Family City, USA, and is a short drive to Deer Creek Reservoir up Provo Canyon and Utah Lake in the middle of the valley. Provo has more of a city feel, though nothing like SLC. Communities get progressively more rural heading south of Provo down to the south end of the valley. The north end of the valley is nice, but isn't as close to lakes.

Salt Lake and Utah valleys do get pretty bad inversions during the winter. If you want to avoid that, you might want to take a look at Park City, Heber, or Midway.

Summers here are hot and dry, but usually not unbearably so. Salt Lake Valley tends to be a few degrees warmer than Utah County. Snow falls and sticks in the valleys probably around 15 times a year.

Thanks for all the replies, they are extremely helpful. I am still a little confused as to what the inversion is and how concerned I should be. Obviously I do not want to put my families health at risk, but do not want to overreact either. I am gathering that Provo area and south is better for being closer to lakes, but is the school / health / conveniences jeopardized as I go south? I want where I choose to be a last move for us..... thats why I have so many questions trying to figure out the best place to start looking. Is Provo area better than Ogen as an example? Thanks again.
