Hey everyone, I'm in need of some more specific help regarding a possible move to Utah. In my last post, I mentioned that I have applied to teach in 2 SLC area districts--Tooele and Jordan. It looks like I could be getting an offer soon, and I want to completely ready to accept.

At this point I am looking at salary. I'd be starting in the low 30's, but I know I've heard that cost of living is a lot lower in Utah. No way could I survive on that on the east coast, but is this something I could live off of out there? What could I expect to pay for a nice 1 bedrm. apartment, pref. in a gated community-either dowtown or in Sandy or Tooele?

I am also considering teaching in Houston (I know, Utah and Texas, kind of random!) where the salary starts at about 10K more. I'm just trying to figure out, with apartment rents being signifcantly higher (at least 1100/month), if this really amounts to much more money. I know there are pro's and con's to living anywhere (a HUGE pro for UT being the scenery!!), but right now I want to look specifically at cost of living. I don't need a lot but want to get by comfortably!

I'd appreciate any and all thoughts. Thanks for reading!

Hi there. Utah is a wonderful place to live and I think you would be happy about your choice if you moved here. The places you mentioned are quite different. I think a lot would depend on where exactly you were. I think you could live comfortably of 30k for sure. Tooele would probably be a fair amount cheaper as far as rent. I'd say at least 7-800 for Sandy; I saw one apt. downton for about 600 and I'd say maybe even a bit less in Tooele. I'd think a gated community might make it a little higher but I can't really say.

Tooele doesn't have any gated apartment communities. It is a very rural area. I did find some small homes that have a very modest rent in the Tooele paper. This is from last weeks paper. There is a new issue every Tuesday and Thursday.

Tooele Transcript Bulletin - Results

Let me know if that link doesn't work.

I would agree that gated apartments aren't the norm. But that's down here in Southern Utah. Most of the storage units don't even have fences around them.

EEEW I'd never live in Tooele, and West Jordan, South Jordan areas not too special either - but probably cheap, also probably very LDS. Avenues, 9th and 9th, Sugarhouse - are the best most popular areas. Apartments 500-800/mo

There is nothing wrong with either West Jordan or Tooele. I have lived all over the valley, and finally chose West Jordan because of its laid-back, friendly residents.
