Best of luck. Unfortunately Portland is very expensive unless you live out a way from the city center. You'll probably enjoy the politics though, and the weather in summer. Nice views too when the mountains come out.
Almost. Though we complain about the lack of a grocery store downtown (because urban living = walking for groceries) it is true that Central Market is a 10-15 min drive up Broadway and Whole Foods not much further. So you're correct that not all areas have ALL of these, some areas have most of these.

It's something you can find on Zillow. It's pretty fudged - basically how far someplace is from stores and whatnot. You'll find neighborhoods score relatively well sometimes, but to walk down the roads you'd take to get somewhere you'd be taking your life into your own hands.

IMO you won't find liberal in SA like you find in some of the city neighborhoods in Portland. Without derailing this thread, I'll just say it's a whole other kind of animal.

I feel you may be able to find a spot in King William, Monte Vista, Olmos Park area. You just gotta have patience. SA has tons of chains-but these areas tend to have the smaller businesses. I would try to move to Austin if you could-not that far away and totally fits your discription. However-I have been to many store fronts in the King William-South Town area-that have been converted to amazing homes. The schools lack a bit-but there are amazing programs for youngsters too. Like in the Blue Star art complex. I do agree that SA is a great place to raise kids. I am a teacher here and I love my kids. Driving and shuttling is a way of life in SA. The summer time weather is crazy hot...so walking is sometimes out of the question(lots of 2nd , 3rd showers will be taken, changing clothing constatly, etc). Winters are devine

What I don't understand is why one of your criteria is based on a political point of view. When looking for houses in the past, not ONCE did I ever tell a Realtor that I was looking for a Liberal/Conservative/Independent neighborhood...if those even exist.

I'm sorry, but I feel comfortable living near anyone- even if they have different political ideas than I do. I feel that if you only want to be friends/associate with people that only think the same way you do, then you are not educating yourself on what else could possibly be Moderator cut: off-topic/personal.

That's my 2 cents....for what it's worth.
