The Mencius Group of restaurants all offer very good Americanized Chinese.

Well, it's hunan-style, which is as far from "American" as you're gonna get when it comes to Chinese food in San Antonio, I know that much.

Me too!!! Yesterday for lunch ~ totally not crowded, so my "companion" (a fellow CD member!) and I were able to sit and chat for a long time without being rushed out. I had the portabella mushroom sandwich (half is in the fridge for lunch today ) and he had the pastrami sandwich. Loved mine (and I think companion enjoyed his also, we were just talking so much that I forgot to ask ), but the fries ~ omgosh! I ate almost all of them! Yum!

Hit Dough Tues night for takeout and it was delicious as usual. Arugula & prosciutto A++. The daily special with morels A. The place was jumping at 8.

Yesterday, against my better judgment, I took an Express News recommendation (from someone not named John Griffin) and headed to Taqueria El Chilaquil for carnitas (and added al pastor, morcilla, and cabrito to the mix). Service is slow, but friendly and speaks little English. The carnitas wasn't bad, but lacked flavor and wasn't especially tender C. The al pastor, on the other hand, was 1 of the better 1's I have had recenlty B. Tripas were cooked to crunchy C. The cabrito was tender and flavorful B+.

I actually have not eaten here yet, but had to share:

Welcome to Mesalegre.com (http://www.mesalegre.com/joomla/index.php - broken link)

Combining the talents of Chef Johnny Hernandez with our local farming community -- watch as chefs prepare lunch using the season’s freshest ingredients from local Central Texas vendor & growers -- and when your produce shopping is complete, sit down and enjoy a unique "al fresco" family style dining experience.

That sounds AWESOME! I love big meaty portabello mushrooms, they're so delicious!
