Cool, major. All that extra heat and humidity we have today sure makes the takeoff roll much longer.

True dat! I don't think this thing yanks and banks no matter what the conditions are. I suspect it flies like a Mack truck!

Still, it is a bit unnerving to watch it fly off at such a low level. But I kept an eye on it as long as I could, and it stayed airborne!

Cheers! M2

Yep, I was on base. Took the first pics from Security Hill, then went down to the flightline and since everyone was taking pictures (to include the sky cops), I did the same. I shot the second video from the back of a pickup truck parked right next to a sky cop car, they didn't seem one bit concerned that we were filming the takeoff...

I swear I saw this thing atop a 747 at the airport maybe 15 years ago but now I wonder if that is even possible. The run way is pretty short for something that weighs this much. Does anyone even think this is possible or is this just a false memory?

News articles I've read said it used to make regular stops here while Kelly was an AFB. Last night's TV news said the last such stop was 13 years ago. You might be remembering correctly.

But at Kelly AFB, not the airport. This monstrosity would never land at SAT, it would cause too much disruption to flight ops there!

The security is also a lot better at Kelly Field (Kelly AFB hasn't existed since the late 1990s!); and Kelly's runway is 3,529m (11,580 ft), whereas SAT's longest is only 2,591m (8,502 ft)

Cheers! M2
