Interesting to note the "Bible Belt" comment. Big Bear has one of the last remaining unconstitutional homophobic laws in CA still on it's books, making it illegal to wear the clothing of the opposite sex in public. You would think with all the creative people there they would be a little more progressive.

Meth labs are OK, but gays need not apply I guess. Sorry I'm pretty liberal.

Also the main road, Hwy 330 is closed until who knows when, due to a slide on Dec 21st. The only way up to either Arrowhead or BB is the back ways off Hwy 38 I think it is above Devore and the otehr end of 38 at Banning, and Hwy 18 from Victorville. That's going to be a nightmare.

I still love Big Bear. Who cares if it has something conservative about it! I still love it! That is what makes someone a true open minded person. I love how these hippy SF people claim how open minded they are yet if one damn little thing is conservative, it's horrible to them.

VOE is worse than what you described nowadays. Lots of drug issues in there and petty crime as well. And I am soft pedaling it, believe me.

Correction BacktoBlue:
What makes someone a true open minded person is not hating people because they are not like you. Hate is fine as long as it's not against you. Right?

I really do not understand what this fight over Lake Arrowhead vs Big Bear is all about. I grew up in Lake Arrowhead, but on the backside of the mountain away from the lake. Many things about my childhood were wonderful, such as living near a national forest, and hiking whenever I wanted to go. I never understood why teens were constantly bored, when I could read books, watch a movie at home, or step outside to go on a nature walk with my dog. There were certain aspects of growing up in Lake Arrowhead that were challenging, such as being teased by kids who told me I was not cool enough or rich enough because I did not follow every trend. When I was young this seemed really horrible, but then I realized it was a blessing because it made me the frugal person I am today. I do not feel I have to wear a certain type of outfit to fit in, and actually as an adult I get complimented quite a bit about how I put outfits together.

The private aspect of the lake can make people who live there feel unwelcome at times, but it never really bothered me much. I would not want to go through life feeling that the public should not come to a lake, and there was a time when Lake Arrowhead had a small public beach. I remember playing on it as a child. Now it has grass on it and swings near it, but bringing back a small public beach would not be a bad idea. See you can bring even more tourism to a location by having some things accessible to the public, and that is why some people definitely find Big Bear more accessible.

Crestline is not nearly as bad as people think either. It has some cute shops, neighborhoods, and truly nice people. Sure it might have problems like any community, but often people look for the negative around every corner. There are nice things about all of the mountain communities, and all the in fighting seems quite nonsense to me.

Personally I live in the city because as a pedestrian walking the mountain got to be old. You can do it if you have a bike, but not recommended in the snow.

Big Bear Lake is paradise -- I lived there for 6 years and found the most wonderful sense of community with many opportunities to get involved and make friends. The air is clean, the sky is intensely blue, the lake is awesome, recreational opportunities are abundant, there is very little crime, and there are enough businesses to have everything you need. Lake Arrowhead, on the other hand, is snootier, in my opinion. There is a small community, but most people are visitors or weekenders. The lake is private, and there are fewer recreational or other opportunities for things to do. There is a lot more smog, since it's at a lower elevation and in the direct path of Los Angeles winds. There's not a lot of crime in Lake Arrowhead and Blue Jay (my favorite community in that area), but there's a higher amount in Crestline. While I enjoyed living in that area (I lived in Running Springs and Arrowbear), I much preferred Big Bear Lake. I suggest reading the Big Bear Grizzly newspaper online, and also reading and listening to the KBHR-FM radio station website.
