You might get better answers over in the House Forum
http://www.city-data.com/forum/house/

Construction costs depend on the site. (Age of and condition of original house, space for building or going 2 stories, etc.) I wouldn't even know where to begin to guess at something like this.

I just caught this thread, but here are some of my thoughts: Riverside has some of the most beautiful urban parks of any city in Southern CA. Fairmont Park and its lake are very popular with families, and it is close to downtown and and some older, attractive neighborhoods that date to the 1800s. Mt. Rubidoux Park is like a mini Griffith Park, and popular for a casual walk, or run... the view at the top is spectacular, especially in the winter.

Riverside, in my opinion, is one of the most attractive mid-size cities in Southern California. A great place to raise a family.

they are probably referring to Riverside County

ALMOST every county in So. Cal has pockets of less than delectable neighborhoods. most gangs are just taggers, iMo. i grew up in the F13 'hood & never heard of any crime (i was a kid - no one at home talked about a lack of safety - their admonition was to be normally cautious) there ('70's) but the evidence of their presence was a pervasive drag.

i perceive Riverside county as commuterville. you definitely, imo, want to move up the ladder, use it as a starting point. it's getting more crowded/polluted all the time.

(lived throughout SB/R/LA counties nearly all my life) kate

btw peeps: the OP hasn't been on the boards since 02/09

you need to find out the cost per square foot: you can call contractors & ask for estimates on the phone, based on square footage.

Does anyone have an opinion about Grand Terrace? I've been reading a alot about Corona and Chino Hills being nice but I go to UCR and hope to not have to travel too far everyday. I currently live near downtown Riverside but I'm currently renting and hope to own a home, a house in particular. Thank you.

Default Living in Riverside

I've lived in Riverside since 1966, from my middle school days forward. I've watched Riverside grow and develop. I grew up here, went to college here, raised my kids here. So from that perspective, I think Riverside can be a good choice to raise a family.

I've lived in La Sierra, the "Wood Streets" (a historical district) and Canyon Crest. At this point in time, I would recommend the 92506 zip code area. Depending where you end up, either King or Poly High schools would be your choices and they are very good. Within the 92506 zip code, you'll see a wide range of housing to choose from. My personal preferences are Canyon Crest, followed by Hawarden. Well built homes, great schools, close to shopping and also to institutions of higher education. UC Riverside, California Baptist University and Riverside Community College are excellent institutions and offer many opportunities to the community as well as for their student populations.

Parks, although not as numerous as in some other communities, feature some outstanding facilities such as the new Andulka Park and the Riverside/AYSO Soccer complex. The Mission Inn, especially at the holiday season, is truly unique and an exceptional There are a very wide variety of activities for all ages, from youth through seniors.

Does Riverside have problems? Sure. I any community the size of Riverside you will see problems. Are there gangs? Yes there are, just like almost every other community. (Just because you may not see them doesn't mean they are not there.) We also have an extremely active law enforcement community that places dealing with them as a high priority.

I hope this all helps.

If those are out of your budget, check out Beaumont: lots of new master planned communities, new schools, and low housing costs. Lake Elsinore has some beautiful gated master planned communities as well, but I don't think the schools have quite caught up and there is a significant meth problem outside of the gated communities. Hope this helps.
I just checked out Beaumont on Redfin and CANNOT believe housing prices.

6 bedroom 3500 square foot built in 2006 for $250,000?

Can anyone tell me why?
