As far as I think, I know San Diego really gained way more than a mere 600 . I've been thinking (before the population statistics were released) that the city was over 1,315,000-1,330,000. What range was San Diego then?

With AZ implementing their own immigration laws I bet it's a LOT more than one thousand.

If you count CA as a whole, we've been losing people for a while now:

More people leave California than arrive - Jan Norman on Small Business : The Orange County Register

I can't blame people who leave. With the poor immigration enforcement, lack of jobs, and high cost of housing, what reason (besides weather) is there to stay in CA, really?

Despite its problems, California is a great place to live.

Was the survey counting only legal citizens?

We have lost a lot of higher wage earners and gained social service users.

That is not true....OC Register story you linked is referring to "net domestic migration" only. Other than a few years in the mid-2000's California has been losing "native" residents to other states for most of the last 20 years. That is more native born US residents "move-out" of California than "move-in" to California in a typical year.

HOWEVER, if you count "natural increase" (births over deaths) and "net foreign migration" (legal and illegal) California AND San Diego CONTINUE to GROW. The "natural increase" accounts for the majority of the growth (about 2/3's of the total).

The California Department of Finance (DOF) is generally considered the "best" at counting our state and local population. The Census always undercounts California. The DOF and the Census count Citizens, Legal Immigrants, and Illegal Immigrants.

The state and county population are INCREASING...even in these tough economic times.

According to the Department of Finance, year over year increase from Jan. 1, 2009 to Jan. 1, 2010 at the State and County level was:

California:
2009: 38,255,000
2010: 38,648,000

San Diego County:
2009: 3,185,000
2010: 3,224,400

Here's a link to their website if you want more detailed data:

Here's the California Department of Finance's latest estimates for the CITY of SAN DIEGO:

Jan. 1st 2009: 1,359,132

Jan. 1st 2010: 1,376,173

An increase of approx. 17,000 residents.
