What do you think of Phoenix as an alternative to San Diego.
Culture, cost, winter climate, things to do

This guy's showin' up all over, this afternoon!

Phoenix isn't *that* dead compared to San Diego. It has different culture, probably lower cost, possible better winter climate. I, myself, prefer Tucson to Phoenix. Or maybe Tempe, since college towns seem to be livelier culturally. But summer temps in any of these will be brutal!

The main things I dislike about Tucson are the crime rate and ugly architecture. While in the SW, you might want to also check out Flagstaff and Albuquerque, NM.

Please............the weather in Tucson would be considered EXTREME by most sane humans 6-7 months out of the year.

And yes, I lived there for 18 broiling months.

Isn't Austin TX supposed to have decent weather - not as good as SD, but bearable and nice much of the year? And it's supposed to be better educated and not as rightwing as the rest of Texas.

I dunno, that's just what I heard.

The summers in Texas (including Austin) are brutally hot. Texas had something like 40 days in a row of 100+ degrees last summer.

Also even though Austin is fairly liberal, for Texas, it probably seems more like San Diego for folks who are thinking of New York City, Portland or San Francisco liberalism.
