We live in Encinitas and love it. We also really like Carlsbad. Those are our choices now, and they will be when we retire also. I've met quite a few retirees in these cities who are very pleased with their decision to move here.

I don't know if you can find an affordable home (ie 700K) in Carlsbad, Point Loma or Encinitas. These areas are near the ocean and really nice ie desirable. Mission Hills overlooks the Old Town area in San Diego, and is also fairly expensive.

Try along the carlsbad/Oceanside border. Melrose street, Lake boulevard, Tamarack, and College/canon road have great home at fairly affordable prices. Many retirees, also.
