I know the guy maybe?

So far, I am really proud of the way everyone has handled themselves in El Cajon today. There were a few rough moments, and a small handful of people who tried to get people spiraled up, but overall, people were able to express their distress and frustration peacefully. I give a lot of credit to both the protesters and the police from all the East County forces for keeping calm heads today. Let's hope it continues tonight and into the weekend.

A few things that have come out today from media reports (and I note that these seemed to be based on actual research/data/facts, not just speculation):

Olango had prior arrest a few years ago for brandishing a gun and being uncooperative with El Cajon police.

One of the involved police officers had a sexual harrassment case filed against him by another female police officer that resulted in his being demoted with in the last few years

Olango was also from Uganda, which makes me wonder if a language or cultural issue may have factored in to how he reacted (speculation on my part, not facts)

The number of protesters in El Cajon today was fairly small -- I heard estimates of 200 or so people. Most of the protesters I heard interviewed stressed they didn't want to incite violence (although a small number were apparently trying to pushing things way).

Some groups are planning a protest in Encanto (in the city of San Diego) this weekend; I'm guessing they were disappointed by the turnout in El Cajon. Again, I worry about this spilling out from locals and becoming something that brings in people from elsewhere who don't know El Cajon or San Diego. If that happens, it might become a different situation.

I read and heard several media reports that the FBI has been called in to investigate as well.

Since you know the arresting officer, when he spotted the suspect in WA, was the suspect acting erratically, or was he just walking along the sidewalk? When the officer approached, did the WA suspect immediately comply with the order to stop, or did he refuse to do so and start yelling and running? Would your friend have kept his hand on his gun if the WA suspect had suddenly turned and gotten into a shooting position?

Right now, we don't yet know how the police officers in El Cajon initially approached Olongo. They could very well have had their hands ON their guns and ordered him to stop too, but somehow things escalated from there. We only know the end result, not the beginning of the encounter. Or, for that matter, everything about what happened during the middle of the encounter. The mayor of El Cajon saw the video and described Olongo as being upset and in distress; that sounds different then the media reports of how your friend found the WA suspect when he approached.

So, again, let's be patient until we have more factual information about how this went down.

Well you would be guessing wrong. And it's not just law abiding black citizens, many white law abiding citizens are getting leery of the police. That also goes for other races.

The police have become very "militarized" over the last several years and it's becoming so that all citizens are being viewed as the problem.

I know some very conservative white people who have never had problems in the past say "don't call the police unless someone is murdering you". This is something new, these people never used to talk like this.

Not saying all cops are like this, of course they aren't. But there has been a shift.

In the Washington case, a positively identified suspect who had killed five people was walking along the street. In such a case no policeman with good sense is going to approach him and invite him to a quick draw competition.

Well....not sure where you live? I live in El Cajon and do not feel threatened by Police. Not El Cajon Police, not La Mesa Police, not San Diego Police and not the Sheriff's dept.

i don't break laws and I don't behave erratic or badly. If I were stopped / questioned, I would comply with the officers.

Looks like our closest mall had to be shut down due to protesters. K*SI TV also reported an estimated 30% of the protesters tonight at the site of the shooting are not from San Diego area but came from LA to protest.

East County Magazine

"September 28,2016 (El Cajon) – Parkway Plaza regional shopping center is shut down for tonight after protests spilled into the mall over yesterday’s fatal police shooting of Alfred Olango, 30, an unarmed African-American man with mental health issues. Marketing director Ken Gray told ECM the mall shut down for the night on advice of police.

“ Where I work, a lot of people were crying and screaming,” Gage Miller told East County Magazine shortly after police evacuated the Walmart store where he works and escorted everyone outside. He said around 3 p.m., “lots of people were marching in the mall and going into the movie theatre…Walmart had to put its gates down. Protesters were spraying water from water bottles all around.”"

SD is filled with nutbag cops who were in the military and have PTSD. Or they never saw any action in combat and want to see action. Cops have no skill set which is why they leave the military and become cops. All they know how to do is shoot stuff and follow orders. Never met a cop I didn't hate.
