After my husband sells his company, we are considering a move from Indiana to North County for lifestyle reasons. Based upon online research, it seems Carlsbad is a good coastal town for us, as it appears to be less pretentious than the OC coastal towns and offers the most as far as NC coastal towns go (would love to be corrected if this isn't true). We are a family of five and our three kids are 4, 2 and infant.

We are going to visit North County (and maybe southern OC) this summer as "locals" instead of "tourists" and I'd like to visit some Carlsbad neighborhoods. With 3 kids, we are looking for larger homes (5br+, 4000+sf). From the sale of the company, we should have enough cash to be in the $1M - 1.5M price range. Any suggestions for neighborhoods? I'd consider trading some square footage for proximity to the beach. Thanks in advance!

Carlsbad, Leucadia, and Encinitas should be on your list of San Diego coastal cities. For Southern OC, San Clemente, San Juan Capistrano, and Dana Point. You are correct in that OC cities are more pretentious. Don't get me wrong, you can find great people everywhere, but coastal OC also carries that stigma the media portrays. In what environment would you like to raise your kids?
