I read the OP as having an appt for something else in three hours and was afraid he wouldn't be out of the DMV in time for his other appt?

Yeah, if you have an appt., don't wait in that line to get a number. You can walk right past that, go in and there is a window for appt. check-in.

My experience was great with an appt.

There is a window inside that you walk right up to and check in for your appt. I was out the door 5 mins after my appt time. Inside less than 20 mins.
Last time I was at the Normal Street DMV I made an appointment beforehand. I still had to wait at least one to two hours after my appointment time, standing the entire time. EVERY chair was filled and people were milling around outside sitting on the stair railings. In my experience the appointment is a fallacy. Perhaps it kept the wait to a couple of hours rather than 3-5 hours.

We should all pray every evening for God to deliver us from Hell, the Hun, and the DMV.

I knew a guy that did some business out in Brawley that planned his DMV and business trips together. He said you would walk right up to the window every time!

I get everything through AAA. They have a DMV section in their building. It's always empty when I go and they're even open on Saturdays!! WOOHOO!

Make an appointment, you can do it online, and it'll tell you what office has the first available appt.

I usually look them up on the website first. Most of them have the estimated wait time info which is not perfect but can tell you which one is not so crowded.
