I recently moved from SF to NYC. Rats are everywhere here. I can hardly go a day without seeing them in the subway or running around at night in the local parks. It seems that everyone I've met has at some point had a mice infestation in their apartment as well.

And don't even get me started on all the bugs out here!

Yikes. How often do you see them outside of the subway and the parks at night? You ever see them in the street?

Lots of roaches as well I'm told...

If you want to see roaches in SF just go eat at Tu Lan on 5th and Market. It's great food but I can't stomach it.

I haven't seen a rat in three years living here, though I have seen a few mice. I saw a huge number of rats in NYC in just one and a half years but they were all in the subway.

Also, keep in mind the difference in climate in NYC. When it's cold out, pests are gonna tend to congregate in warm areas (like your home). I never had a problem with it there, though. You may just be running into a string of people who lived in crappy apartments.

I had the pleasure of seeing a big, white rat in union square once beneath sewer lid. It was hilarious somone yelled "Rat" and the rat stopped and made eye contact with me as if he knew we had just spotted him. It was amazing.

Haha. It least he was UNDER the sewer lid rather than parading around Union square.

My daughter used to have a pet rat that was almost like a dog in temperament. We would give her (the rat) time out of her cage to explore the house everyday, and when it was time to go back in her cage we would just call out her name. No matter where she was in the house she would come running and eagerly climb up your leg to be put back in her cage! Awwwwwwww!
