My boyfriend and I are currently looking to locate from Martinez to Oakland. I work in Oakland and he in San Francisco. We have a small dog who we would like to have a yard for. We are looking at houses in the Eastmont Hills and Maxwell Park. Which area would be considered "safer" than the other? We may need to make a decision tomorrow. Yikes!

The Eastmont Hills neighborhood is right on top of several active traces of the Hayward Fault, so I'd say Maxwell Park is safer.

Ok, very good to know. i appreciate your response as i will certainly be taking earthquake hazards into consideration. very interesting. Thank you.

Although i guess i should have been more specific when i said SAFETY- i was more speaking in refence to crime and the like. Keep it comin!!

In that regard, they are both similar in that they are middle class areas close to lower income areas. I'm not as familiar with the community in the Eastmont Hills, but Maxwell Park is very active in terms of organizing, hiring private patrols, etc. Most people love it here, but you do need to be comfortable with an urban environment.

Thank you so much. That is pretty much my understanding as well. i like that maxwell park is *somewhat* closer to public transportation and things to do in general than Eastmont Hills. i have also noticed a lot more information regarding Maxwell Park's tight knit community, which is attractive to me. On the other hand i havent been able to find anything regarding a strong community in Eastmont Hills. Are there any people out there who can tell me other wise? is there something i am missing? i really like both neighborhoods and while they seem similar i know they cant be exactly the same. it is difficult because there is very little information about Eastmont Hills on the internet. Maybe its the best kept sercet? who knows.

They are both similar, decent neighborhoods but pretty close to higher crime areas. We had friends living on 73rd just above McArthur for many years though they finally left a few years ago. I would go with Eastmont Hills but try to be as far above MacArthur as possible, preferably above Outlook Ave.

the house we are looking at is pretty much the furthest east from macarthur as the Eastmont Hlls Border allows. right next to 580. i dont partcularly like the idea of being so close to 580, but as you said it is better than being on the macarthur side of things. thanks

As a general rule, the deeper East you are, the worse it gets. Maxwell Park.

As a person that grew up in East Oakland, I am really tired of the trend to give every area a name so that you don't have to say East Oakland. Where is Eastmont Hills? I couldn't tell you. And I'm willing to bet anyone living there for the last 50 years couldn't either.

I never heard of it either, but Google shows the area and its borders.
