Hi All,

We are planning to move to Palo Alto next year with two boys to go to school there. They will be in Grade 7 and Grade 9 next year. I heard there is an ELD Program that they must get in since their English is second language. A friend told me that her friend's son went there in Grade 6, and he is still in ELD Program. The boys is in Grade 9 now. The mother is so worried about him not being able to get out of this program, that means he can not apply for universities but community colleges. Could anyone please tell me if it's true or not.
Thank you for all your advices!

Implementation of ELD standards has to be uniform throughout the state. It shouldn't make any difference what school district they are in.

The ultimate goal will be to get the boys reclassified as English-language proficient. This is accomplished by means of scores that they receive on the California ELD Test (CELDT). More information can be had here: http://www.lbusd.k12.ca.us/Main_Offi...df/EL_FAQs.pdf. You can also request information in your primary language from either the school district or Sacramento.

Hi Brenda-by-the-sea,

Thank you so much for the useful web sites! I really appreciate your help!

I don't understand why my friend's son is still in ELD Program after three years there. Is it very difficult to pass the Test? If it's true that ELD students can only apply for community colleges, we might go somewhere else instead of CA. My husband and I are planning to come to take a look in Feb. I tried to call the schools, but they are not open until Jan 3. If you have any suggestions, please let me know. Thanks again.
