We are considering relocating to the San Jose area from Texas this summer. I would be working in Milpitas. We visited a few months ago and looked in Los Gatos and Mountain View, which were both nice, but still expensive and the commute from Los Gatos is not short. We are considering Pleasanton and would appreciate information about the expected commute time to McCarthy Blvd. in Milpitas.

Between the three, Mountain View has the easiest commute to Milpitas. Los Gatos is next. Pleasanton is a very, very distant last. The Sunol Grade is a major hassle and a bad bottleneck, and there's no nice way of getting from the 680 corridor into Milpitas either.

20 to 45 minutes (rarely worse due to a traffic issue). The more disciplined you are about commute time (earlier is better unless you are able to flex really late) the less painful and the more consistent the commute time.

I know someone doing this right now and he says he plans 45 minutes and considers any less time a bonus.

It all depends on your commute times. I commute from Pleasanton to 1st street (near airport, Milpitas is closer) and it never takes more than 1 hour, 40 mins average. 25 miles door to door. Of course I leave later, around 9am (commuter lanes open to everyone) and in the evening, leave around 7pm. If you are an 8-5 type, then yes, the commute from about 4:30pm-6:30pm is not much fun.

I have friends that live in Los Gatos and South Almaden, half the distance of my commute, but they only save about 10 mins over mine based on the really poor highway access into those areas.

Also, I don't think you can compare living in Pleasanton to the other areas. For me, it's just much nicer here (minus the commute, I don't think there are any negatives other than home prices). Of course everyone has their own opinion. You should visit each area and see how each feels to you and your family.
