I thought this quote was interesting. Lennar said that gases emitted by drywall does not present a health risk, yet it turns copper wire black, tarnishes metal studs, and smells like raw sewage. Maybe they should hang out in one of the homes affected for a few weeks.

It is corrosive, and it no doubt will prove to be hazardous to the health of anyone who is exposed to it {how long the exposure needs to be is the question}. The government may say if you are in the open are for 5 minutes, there is no health risk, but who really knows, the studies aren't completed yet.
Unfortunately when your in business of selling homes, sometimes you win, sometimes you lose; it is a part of the risk of doing business. This one is going to be pretty costly! Any good attorney can turn anything in to a major health hazard, and when they are motivated by the potential for a huge payout like this, they will be very agressive!

Too bad for all involved, unless you are an attorney, of course!

Durock is a cement board product that is very durable and is great on wet walls such as behind ceramic tile, behind tubs, showers, and sink areas.

It is made by USG and is a proven product. You should not have had any problems with that.

The company attempted to reassure investors Monday about any potential health risk associated with the defective drywall: "Independent government organizations have determined that exposure to the gases emitted by the drywall does not present any danger to human health."

Sure - they said the same thing about DDT, Dioxin and Agent Orange.

This is interesting:

" Government studies could also help figure out if builders like Lennar and suppliers including Banner knew in advance that Chinese drywall was defective. That's not a conclusion that's likely to come out of the lawsuits. If it turns out that Lennar and others knew that the drywall was defective, insurance companies would deem it fraud and no longer cover the loss. So attorneys suing the developers and suppliers will avoid asking questions. "

I'm not aware of any homes that have tested positive for Chinese drywall in Palmer Ranch. Maybe someone who lives in there like, SmileDoc can chime in on this question.

Reply to Scots question about Palmer Ranch - (and I just found this forum) For true peace of mind, if you have a question about a particular property, you need to have an inspection firm do the testing. There were so many different builders, so many different sub-contractors, some using the same, some using different material suppliers - that you could not get a dependable answer. Even if your home is ok, the house down the street might have "CHI-WALL", you just don't know. Of course if the typical signs are evident - you might need to worry, if there are no signs, but you want to be sure - get the inspection. No I'm not in that business.
