If they are less than semi-intelligent, well Darwin's theory proves correct.

I know a few dead thieves would deter but law enforcement simply will not tolerate that. They'll arrest the snipers sooner than the thieves--who they really will not arrest at all. There must be some non-violent ways of blocking them that strategists haven't thought of.

These crimes are a result of jurisdictions attempting to legitimize criminal behaviors. All of this is done under the banner of equity. Anyone who didn't see this as a result of not prosecuting lower level shoplifting isn't responsible enough to hold elected office.
California downgraded shoplifting merchandise less than $950 to a misdemeanor. Stores and police don't bother with it any longer.

Then you have the whole movement to eliminate cash bail as it's considered racist and especially punitive to minority women (according to Biden's proposal last year). That worked out real well with the lunatic that plowed through the Christmas parade in Wisconsin. Now everyone's crying that he was released on only $1,000 bail.

I'd like to see these bozos get what they have coming to them but a sniper would probably be deemed overkill by the legal system.

I agree. The most logical solution is to stop them from getting in. So how do store owners do that?

Outside of Florida they can demand that they produce their papers for inspection and verification. Thus having a staring point if the police does choose to investigate.. However any such strategy of entrance barriers will convince even more to choose Amazon and other online retailers.

I would say that the most logical step is to make the merchandise harder to pick up. The display would have to be nearer to Fort Knox standards. With the labor shortage it will be hard to staff enough sales/security but that is the world we live in since communities have increasingly voted for folks as Districts Attorney who don't want the criminal class locked up and thus the predators have escalated.

Metal bars over the windows. You do what you have to do.

Fill the showcase with identical but fake merchandise and keep the real stuff locked up in the back, switches to lock the doors, employee escape routes
or do like Seattle and replace the police with counselors

It is not just high end goods. Over the past 10 years or so more and more of the local markets have been locking up laundry detergent and you have to wait for a staff member to not only unlock the case but take the merchandise to the counter as they try to avoid the death by a thousand cuts.
