But its like 60,000 people isn't? Why not Rock Hill or something? Is it because it's centralized in the upstate?
Greenville is a city of more like 300,000 than 60,000. Greenville has no cares about annexing like Chas and Cola are trying to do. None of the Upstate cities do. Greenville, Spartanburg, Anderson, and Easley are much larger than they look, but they dont push to expand.
Greenville is also the hub of everything from jobs to amenities to whatever, you name it. Only thing it isn't hub of is sports. That title goes to Clemson, especially fall Saturdays.
Yes BMW is in Spartanburg County, but its really only one mile away from Greenville County and is closer to the city of Greenville than S-burg. Plenty of people come all the way from Anderson and Gaffney to work at BMW, that location is central. They choose that location not necessarily because of Spartanburg, but because of the proximity to the airport and inland port, which is on the county lines. Quickest way to get German execs to the HQ, and cars on the train down to Charleston.
And Rock Hill/York County isnt considered Upstate. The Upstate is Greenville, Spartanburg, Anderson, Pickens, Oconee, Abbeville, Greenwood, Laurens, Cherokee, Union.
Why does everybody in the upstate claim they live in Greenville? Why not Spartanburg, Anderson or Greer?
This has been addressed but Greenville is the hub and center of the Upstate. The 60,000 population number is very deceiving. Greenville County is at just under 500K, by far the largest county in the state. Greenville - Anderson - Spartanburg are very connected communities and it is just easier for people to say, "I live in Greenville" when asked by someone not from this area where they live. That same question asked by one local to another would be answered with a more specific answer like, "I live in Boiling Springs". I did the same thing when I lived in West Columbia. I told locals that I lived in West Columbia but others not from the area, I would just say I lived in Columbia.
When I was growing up, it was Greenville-Spartanburg. Spartanburg has lost jobs and people since then. If you drive I-85 through Spartanburg, there a lot of empty buildings that once housed manufacturing jobs. Many Spartanburg city residents moved out of the city to the county. Development all along I-26 north grew up overnight. Greenville did a great job with their downtown. Spartanburg has tried downtown redevelopment many times, but failed. They even boondoggled a downtown parking garage, built with federal money, that they made it onto 60 Minutes.
If you count the daily tourists in town Charleston and Myrtle Beach are by far the most populated cities.
Walk downtown on a spring Saturday afternoon in Greenville, Cola, Charleston or MB. The density of people isn't even close. Temporary populations.
Downtown Greenville is pretty busy for a city that isn't a tourist location. Not sure about Columbia. Where can I find GDP for each area? If this is completely true, it should show in GDP numbers. Don't dismiss other cities just because they aren't ran on tourism.

Well if you count daily commuters into the city limits of Columbia or Greenville, I would argue it may even out the tourist count more than you think. Columbia with all the state employees and Greenville being a business center pull more commuting traffic into their respective downtown areas than Charleston or Myrtle Beach. While I wouldn't pretend to compare Upstate tourism to Charleston or Myrtle, you may be surprised at the density of foot traffic in downtown Greenville on a spring Saturday or any day.
