It depends on whether you prefer to be closer to Pullman or Spokane but there are a number of small (I mean small) towns between the two. Colfax is one of the larger small towns and is close to Pullman. Spangle is a small town closer to Spokane. In between you have Rosalia, Oakesdale, Garfield/Palouse and a couple of others.

I'm not sure what you mean by small. Colfax is about 3k. Spangle is about 300. The others are the size of Spangle or smaller (give or take a hundred) Unless you're constantly driving back and forth in winter, the commute is not unbearable at about an 1:15. That said, if you end up in or near Spokane, you'll want to stay on the southern end/outskirts of town to avoid adding on a drive through the city each way.

Rosalia is pretty much half way for each of you (around 45 minutes driving). Remember that highway 195 can be pretty dangerous in the winter, so the commute would be longer. That area gets a lot of snow and wind, which can make for bad driving conditions. When I went to school in Pullman, I knew someone who did that trip every day for 5 years, so it is probably okay with some flexibility.
