I do know of more and more people watching the NFL back home in Ireland compared to none about 10 years ago so maybe it is increasing in popularity. The biggest drawback is a 3hrs of ads for an 80 minute game (maybe slight exaggeration (sp)) and its hard to stay focused for a 5 second play and next time you see action is 5 minutes later.

Because they don't have an international competition like a world cup. So why someone in Slovakia would be a fan of Colorado Rockies or Carolina Panthers? He needs a team to represent his city and country!!!

^ This

American sports are centered around advertisements. Commercials are so ingrained in the culture that Americans take it for granted.

Furthermore foreigners don't understand why NFL plays only last 8 seconds and then there is break, substitution and huddling. They rather watch Rugby without the helmets and pads

I grew up on baseball but expecting foreigners to commit 3 hours of their day to sitting in front of a TV consisting of essentially 20+ commercial breaks will never catch on. Compare that to soccer which has 2-50 minute periods that are commercial free (running clock) and ads sandwiched in the middle during Halftime

So you answered the thread question
MLB and NFL are American sports with American traditions. Other countries don't follow it because there traditions are different and are not represented in these sports. There is no American football world cup like the Rugby, handball, Hockey, soccer world cups. Baseball maybe is more famous because they finally got the idea that a world exists beyond USA and Japan and finally created a baseball international tournament

Duh.

That's why I think this thread has gone on longer than it should have. My question is, why does NFL and Baseball HAVE to be more popular around the rest of the country? Other than the greedy commissioners, no one here in the States cares about OUR sports becoming more popular around the rest of the globe. Especially with the NFL.
