Agreed. The thing is, St. Pete has that Bohemian vibe in a tropical setting that I just love. I guess people are either into that or not. Tampa looks/feels more gritty and urban. South Tampa is most definitely more yuppie, and not boho. Ybor USED to be more bohemian, now it has morphed into a more "edgier" type of vibe that I don't like as much, while Central Ave. in St. Pete has become more artsy and eclectic.
So it really just depends on what one prefers. Frankly, I hope St. Pete stays the way it is. I don't live there, but we visit a lot, and it's possible we could move there one day. I don't want it to be hugely "discovered" with developers knocking down all the beautiful old architecture. This is one city that has kept it's treasures -not one but TWO beautiful old "pink palaces," (Vinoy and DonCesar!) to name a couple. And the new architecture is fantastic as well (Dali Museum anyone?) My husband and I find it inspiring in every way.

It just comes down to what you like. Tampa has more history and definitely has a grittier feel to it, as mentioned in a few earlier posts. St. Pete is more mellow, with wide, relatively calm streets and lots of midcentury tract homes and whatnot. I could spend my life in either city, really. There doesn't seem to be any real rivalry between the two, and even if you live in City A, you're still only twenty to forty minutes from City B.

I've just gotten the impression Tampa has more "stylish" people and fashion/appearance generally matter more in South Tampa than downtown St. Pete.
I could be wrong as well. In terms of architecture, St. Pete does sound more interesting.

Tampa has more pre-1940 architecture, with bungalows, shotgun homes, brick buildings, et cetera. St. Pete has more midcentury architecture, as well as a lot of Florida Land Boom-era buildings. Both have their fair share of tract homes and stucco.

That is a perfect description of St. Pete! Bohemian etc. I love that. Gritty is also a great adjective to describe Tampa, although there are some neat parts of Tampa as well.

It's definitely nice that the two cities aren't very far apart. I'm hoping to stay in Pinellas 95% of the time, but it's nice to have Tampa nearby whenever I want to head in for a Lightning or Bucs game, as well as other things I can't find in Pinellas.
I've picked up on a little rivalry just from the posts in this forum. I'm guessing that's due to the fact that the two cities are very different, IMO.

What you are hoping for is exactly what we do. Except it is more like 98% in Pinellas. lol
I think it is awesome that there are to very different metropolises so close together. Each has a very different vibe and feel which I think is fantastic. This is what makes this region truly great.
I think the rivalry is humorous since both cities are so very different. St. Pete wishes it had the name recognition and big city things Tampa has. Tampa wishes it had the beaches and more of the tourist stuff St. Pete has.
