Recent article from Forbes Business Mag has great news about Tenn. Two of our cities are even in the TOP TEN.! With 50 states that avg gives about 4 cities per state, and we got our quota of four. Best places for Business/career
# 5 KNOXVILLE
# 9 NASHVILLE
# 108 CHATTANOOGA
# 131 MEMPHIS
Chat scored very high for cost of doing Business, but lower score for crime & education.
N.C. had #1 at RALEIGH, and # 7 at DURHAM. Other top ten out West.

Very good for Knoxville and Nashville.....this is excellent even though some may not like it, but it's how a city / county can get ahead, improve schools, improve the general quality of live for the people living there. The MOST important thing is PLANNING the growth, this is critical for a success and healthy growth and it appears that Knoxville is already having meetings to discuss this effect. That's the way to go.

I was about to post this, too. You beat me to it!

I think this can be good news, although for those who wish that things could stay the same around here (Knoxville) it's probably not good news. I know a lot of people in beautiful East Knox County are fighting tooth and nail against re-zoning some beautiful farms into a business park along I-40 at Midway Road. This high ranking at Forbes confirms what the county zoning commission is saying to those farmers: businesses WANT to come to Knoxville but there's not very much available appropriately-zoned land. (I'm not sure I believe that, but that's what they're saying.)

Yep, you didn't get enough illegal aliens to mess up your state!

The problems in Miami and LA need to be examined as an example of what not to do as your city progresses!

5 . Knoxville, Tenn.

Population: 662,000
Job Growth: 1.6%
Income Growth: 2.6%
Big Employers: U.S. Department of Energy, Covenant Health, University of Tennessee, Wal-Mart Stores (nyse: WMT - news - people ), St. Mary's Health System.

The area is home to 11 colleges that spit out 8,000 graduates a year. Last year food-service distributor Sysco (nyse: SYY - news - people ) announced plans to invest $40 million and hire 300 people for a new complex. One draw: business costs that are 14% below the national average.

Notice that seems to be the big thing, that it costs less to do business. This doesn't necessarily mean it is a great place to find a good paying job.
