I grew up in Killeen and I don't really care for any part of Central Texas between Austin and Dallas. Killeen is low in density and sprawls alot.That said, if you like the atmosphere, the area around Downtown Killeen is pretty avoidable. I mean, it is not nearly big city problems but it has problems and I've heard it's getting a bit worse. From what I noticed before I left Killeen is that it is becoming the city in the area and Harker Heights is becoming it's suburb. The Southern portion of the city isn't bad. In fact, it's nice. New developments along Stan Schlueter loop and Clear Creek Road are rising and the schools are pretty good as well. Killeen is the largest city in the "centroplex" so they will have more amenities than the surrounding areas.

yup avoid downtown Killleen and probably almost any part of Killeen except the newer developments like Spade said above, on Stan Schlueter and Clear Creek. And of course anything near the airport is VERY good area.

Nothing. People have different reasons for not liking the city. When I say downtown and the areas surrounding it are avoidable, I mean the homes. They are not desireable. There are some nice homes just to the east of downtown.

it's not that bad. but comparatively speaking, it is the least desirable of towns to live in, in the Ft Hood area.
like i said before, the cookie cutter suburbia sprawl, strip malls, malls, chain restaurants scene just aint my thang, so i would personally never live there.
however, there are areas in the outskirts that i really like, and would consider-the area going south on Clear Creek (but not near Hwy 190)...but going south nearby the airport and further south, or just west of the airport. Ivy Mountain Road-gorgeous.
but there are just way too many options that are better than Killeen, so why settle when ya dont have to.

There are not many other places in Central Texas between Dallas and Austin that are that much better unless you like living in a very small town. I guess it goes down to preference. Like I said, I don't care for the area but I prefer Killeen to Temple, Waco, or Cove. But that's just me. They are all suburbia cookie cutter type of cities. Maybe if the OP states his preference a little bit more he will get a better answer. But there's nothing wrong with settling in Killeen if they want to.

You may not like Waco, but Waco looks "NOTHING'' like Killeen.
