See Mark's post above.

By the way, "Wonderland" in my moniker is not a physical location. I'm not calling Tyler "Wonderland."

And I AM glad I don't live in Marshall, mainly due to it's population. In fact, Tyler is a little small for my preferences but at least it's closer to Dallas without having to be IN Dallas. See, I don't want to live in Dallas either - LOL.

I prefer mid size cities. Marshall is more like a small town.

Personally I think I'd choose Marshall. Much smaller, yes, but you're not in a bad spot with Shreveport and Longview less than 45 minutes away.
Knock yourself out. If you lived in Marshall, Longview, Shreveport, Tyler, Nacogdoches, or (fill in the blank) you would quickly see the differences. But everyone has their personal preferences and different cities or towns fit different people.

You apparently have not read my countless posts on here stating what Tyler has that most cities our SIZE in Texas doesn't have. I have largely been responding to those like yourself, who have spent little or no time in Tyler. Most have only lumped Tyler into a group of similar-sized cities that people may have once had an experience visiting, and have come up with the conclusion that they are all pretty much the same, lol

But on this Veterans Day, I will not compile my extensive list of how Tyler is different than most cities our size, most of the differences are positive differences, no not all are positive, just the vast majority. Some of the difference is major, major enough for people to chose to relocate to Tyler over other cities. One of the differences is, I just typed myself into needing to explain, lol, is that Tyler does not want to grow much if any.
Tyler leaders do not want to participate in the competitive boom mode of most Texas cities.

If you care enough to understand the differences you can look at my almost countless posts on this point in the Tyler sub-forum. I just know extensive stuff on Tyler, Tyler information is a life-long hobby, why, I have no clue, yeah, as some have pointed out I "really don't have a life, do I" lol

Hold your horses. I haven't made a definitive decision. I'm just pointing out that the information I have on both places makes one seem a little more appealing than the other, mostly due to location.

Not necessary to live in either to pick up on the differences. I'm still waiting to hear the specifics of why you're happy to live in one but not the other.

Don't know. Everytime I've been to Tyler it looked and felt like your typical town of about 100K in the Southern U.S. I'm aware of some of its special features like the rose garden, the symphony and the zoo, but I guess I just don't care about those things. The big trees make it a gem in Texas, but the further east you go the less remarkable Tyler seems IMO.

You have somewhat of a shortlist of what makes Tyler a little different, at least. As I said, you would need to spend a little time and look through my posts to see Tyler's differences amount to more than just a few as compared to many other cities of 100,000.

Just a few more differences, The U.T. Cowen Performing Arts Center, which has been here more than 20 years, attracts all types of programs that also perform in Dallas and Houston, usually on weekends, but often stop in Tyler on Tuesday or Thursday nights, yes, sometime weekends, to fill in there schedules when coming to the megacities in Texas. Secondly, the medical services you find in Tyler have few rivals in Texas and many if not most cities of 100,000. Do you care about the lakes, golfing, you don't have in many cities Tyler size that offers all this and Tyler State Park, as well.

And this should be important to you if you own property inside the city limits. Tyler's property tax is the lowest of any city in Texas over 18,000. So low, usually 1/2 lower than most cities Tyler's size. Meaning theirs is at least 100% higher, twice as much. yes, other taxes, I.S.D., county are just average, but...

Maybe I will add other differences between Tyler and other similar size cities, however, this really should be enough, lol? No, again, Tyler is not Utopia, lol.

Look up my posts and Mark Senior's posts in the Tyler forum if you're really interested. I am not going to bother repeating all the reasons. But I'll tell you this - if you truly are considering a move to NE Texas, I would surely RENT somewhere for at least a year before deciding which city to live in if at all possible.

Culturally, politically and socially for the most part Tyler is no different than any other city or town in East Texas. It's the biggest city in East Texas and has the most amenities so it is the premier city of East Texas. That's where the differences lie between a Tyler or a Marshall. It's in the amenities/population. But like I said politically and culturally it's generally the same. Each cities and towns do have their own distinct characteristics but nothing to different where you'll notice it as soon as you get there.

You'll notice it if you live somewhere more than a few weeks.

I've lived in East Texas for over 18 years into my young adult life. Not to mention my family tree in East Texas is over a 100 years old so i'm all too familiar with East Texas including Tyler. Outside of the amenities It's way more in common than the small differences. This is not Miami to Orlando difference here.
