We are moving from Kentucky to Athens. What can you tell me about that area?

Beautiful area, and many very nice folks there. But beware - Henderson County is full of meth cookers and thieves, and Athens seems to be the center of the action. Also, there are certain people in positions of power who are in their positions strictly to keep the "good ole boy" system alive. Boss Hogg lives today, in Athens, Texas. Actually a couple of the most notable and "upstanding citizens" would make Boss Hogg look like a choirboy by comparison. Try to avoid any dealings with the local water board, especially.

And... if you want a decent steak, try the Ole West Steakhouse on Hwy. 31. The fiddler's reunion in May is not to be missed, esp. if you like western swing music and dancing in the street.

Lovely area of the state. Tara Vineyards is there and you should have a peek. Fun parties at night.

I've heard about this legendary "meth cooking" in East Texas, but I've yet to run into it. I weekend a little south of there in Cherokee County.

The Marina on Lake Athens has fair food. The fish hatchery next door is nice to view.

One thing about small town, East Texas, the people are really down on themselves...far more than the area deserves. It's beautiful country.

Oh yea forgot to mention the Marina. Best fried catfish and pinto beans you'll find anywhere around. And the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center is not to be missed if you're interested in fishing, wildlife, etc..

Be glad you haven't run into meth cooking. My ex-neighbors used to deposit their used up cooking supplies and materials in my woods. Maybe Cherokee county is not as bad as Henderson County. Count yourself lucky.

Athens is a great place! Don't worry about the drug issues....no more there than anywhere else. We moved from the metroplex and they were cooking meth right next door to our home in one of the best neighborhoods north of Dallas. There are some beautiful homes in Athens and great prices!
