Which of the following signs of negligence or lack of amenities would bother you enough in any hotel to complain to the front desk manager?

Which of the following have you experienced?

I personally can relate to the one with the remote (an otherwise impeccable middle-class hotel in Merida, Mexico), the one with the lack of channels (many corporate hotels in the U.S.), the weak wireless signal, the disgusting toilets (Morocco, never seen elsewhere), the baby up crying at 3 a.m. (that was my eight-month old sister!), etc. but many of the rest I can't, although I can certainly see each of them happening! The one with the accidental wake-up call and bed not changed I had a belly laugh just imagining!

Frankly, most of the things on the list might mean a call to the front desk requesting correction, but not neccessarily a complaint to the manager. If the problems weren't satisfactorily corrected, then I would probably complain.

I would alert the manager about intoxicated/impaired staff, but again, not neccessarily a complaint, unless they somehow put my life in danger.

First thing I check in any hotel is whether or not I can get the AC to cool the room off enough for me. Doesn't matter if it's winter or summer.....indoor heating always feels stifling to me unless it's bloody cold as hell out and I can open a window directly to get some cold air in.

The only other things I checked were all related to cleanliness. The rest it can be dealt with through things like earplugs, sound machines, etc.

As for employees on drugs, it is not my place to police other people's behavior unless I saw someone being put at direct risk...then I'd say something!

My top 5 things i would complain about...

1.Old man in G-string in hot tub
2.Small but noticeable pungent food stains on bed
3.Bedsheets on one bed not changed
4.Weak Wi-Fi signal
5.Misplaced wake-up call at 5 a.m.

Don't want to waste my energy for the other "problems".
I smoke so can't really complain about the air

Lack of adequate air conditioning i would only complain about if daytime temperatures are 30+ celsius.

To me the most annoying thing would be not to receive a necessary wake-up call or to get a wrong call during the night from the front desk.

Aside from disgusting rooms, the only other time I've complained to a manager was my room not being ready until 4 when check-in time was noon.

I hate it when windows don't open in the room. It's so claustrophobic! Other than that, the only thing I'd probably complaint about to the manager is a dead hooker under the bed.

I encountered the following this weekend at an extended stay property in Oak Brook, IL:

1) Full sized refrigerator stopped working spoiling food.
2) Microwave "arked" when heating water - a huge bubble formed.
3) Cigarette smoke billowed in from vent in "non smoking" floor.
4) Seat back of desk chair bent back 90 degrees.
5) Three of the electrical outlets did not work.
6) Bathroom sink does not drain.
7) All the ambiance of a section 8 apartment complex.

Only one more night ...

I answered about 50% or more of those as yes. If I am not satisfied with my room I immediately ask to be assigned a new room. If none are available, and I have not been there more than an hour, I would request a refund and find another hotel. Only when people vote with their wallet or their feet will some people get the message. With things like a mistaken wake-up call that woke me for no reason, I speak to the manager in the morning and generally get 10-15% off my bill. It never hurts to ask for compensation if you have been inconvenienced.
As for noisy neighboring rooms, the manager can hardly ask someone to make sure the baby only cries in the daytime! LOL. I guess if you are staying additional nights, you could ask to be moved. In Vegas we had idiots staying across the hall from us who were loudly arguing in the hallway outside our door at 3 am. I opened the door and said "Why are you yelling at 3 am? People are trying to sleep" (well, I was anyway). They had locked themselves out and were waiting for a bellhop. I loudly told them to shut the "f" up, and heard applause from the rooms on either side of me!
