Almost always, especially international. I accumulated over 7 million miles on AA and still have a bunch left.

Pretty much always due to upgrades. Even when I'm buying I fly first or business on transcon redeyes and overseas flights. It is worth it to arrive fully rested due to the lay flat seat. Tried it in PE last year and won't make that mistake again. Ended up jet lagged the entire week due to not getting any sleep on the flight. Cost of the upgrade for two tickets would have been a lot less than the cost of being in a fog all week.

Pretty much every time, but it's almost exclusively on complimentary upgrades from the airline because I practically live aboard their planes. Frequent flyers represent most of the first class passengers, although some purchase it.

I travel the world, not some narrow segment thereof (including the segment I think of as "developed" or rich countries). I flew 29 carriers in the final nine months of 2014, the vast majority not associated with any of the groups. (Star Alliance, OneWorld, et cetera) Fly into Aden, and you'll be on Felix Airways, African Express, Yemenia. That doesn't give you some status that will "help" when you fly into Malabo (on ASKY, Ceiba, Cronos, Westair Benin, Air Annobon). The other challenge is that I'm a business traveler. I don't get to choose my airline to maximize points or status. I fly what's cheap.

never. I fall asleep on just about every flight anyway before we even leave the runway so it makes no difference to me. Even on long international flights, I'm happy as a clam.

I've been lucky enough to get bumped a few times. I regularly, but almost all shorter domestic flights 3 hours or less. Honestly, if I had to fly east coast to west coast again, I would look really hard at it. I was MISERABLE in coach, could hardly stand straight or walk after the flight. I can only imagine what it would be like flying to Asia or Australia.

Long ago, i was a Gold Medallion on Delta and could call 48 hours before my flight and upgrade to 1st class. I upgraded nearly every flight.. so I sat in 1st almost every flight for several years, which was a flight about every week... since then it has been few and far between. i miss it.

Only for really long flights (10+ hours). I have a 38" inseam, so I'm basically in fetal position in economy class.

I'll send you my AA awards info if you want to contribute to southkakkatlantan's travel charity fund by donating some miles
