I travelled in to Trieste, Italy, by bus, got off at the bus station and caught the next bus out, 30 minutes later. I'd always thought the place had such an interesting history that I really wanted to go there but what a letdown!
I'm sure that if I'd stopped there for a few days I could have found plenty of interest but sometimes first impressions count
The very first place that pops into my head is Omaha, Nebraska. Never, ever, ever again. Ever. Granted, I had no expectations but it managed to leave a very bitter impression!
Define nice? We're all gonna differ with our opinions. The pp mentioned Memphis, which we happened to like. Everyone has different views, and I personally hate Omaha! Luckily, it's not exactly a vacation destination!

I'm glad to say most places I've been to have met or exceeded my expectations. If a place wasn't that great I wasn't expecting it to be that great. What can I say, I like to do a bit of research before I go anywhere.
Funny, but my most disappointing place I ever visited was also in Italy: Venice. Man, I was looking forward to seeing Venice for years, since I love all things Italian (my mom is Italian and I was raised around the language and the food) and I thought all those waterways and canals would be romantic and gorgeous. But...Jesus! What a letdown. The stench! The rats! The heat and humidity! (I went in the summer.) The dilapidated buildings. A three star hotel there couldn't hold a candle to a good Motel 6 in Lubbock, TX.
Luckily, after three days in Venice we went to Florence, which was so beautiful I never wanted to leave--and still dream about retiring there.
Most people have no idea that the canals in Venice smell really bad in the summer! We avoided going during that time for that exact reason! And, around October or so, they flood the surrounding areas so you can't even walk around the squares! We went during a great time and enjoyed it, but I can totally see how the August heat could make things unbearable!
I would say most disappointing places I have been considering the hype is Las Vegas and Orlando.
Both places are like the old Roman "bread and circuses" lightweight entertainment for the low IQ masses.
And both places are stocked with local citizens that all came from some place else and you have the sense it was the "end of the line" for them. Las Vegas especially has a whiff of desperation about the whole place.

Some of my interests include motor racing and history, so it is inevitable that I will visit Italy. But I hear there are a number of places that are really overdone and touristy not to mention all the pickpockets. Probably for me I'd want to focus on smaller towns and cities and avoid the mega metropolises like Rome.
