* O'Hare: 0
* Edison Park: 0
* Clearing: 0
* Beverly: 0
* Mount Greenwood: 0
* Forest Glen: 1
* Norwood Park: 2
* Montclare: 2
* Lincoln Park: 3
* North Park: 3
* Hegewisch: 3
* North Center (i.e. Roscoe Village): 5
* Lincoln Square: 5
* Hyde Park: 6
* Dunning: 7
* The Loop: 8
* Lakeview: 11
* Near North Side (River North, etc - a lot of nightlife - a lot of these shootings are nightlife related): 19

This is a total of 75 shootings, or 2.1% of the city's shootings for the year. Total population of these places is 615,195 as of the 2010 Census (almost the same as Boston's 2010 population). Just as a comparison, one of the troubled areas of town, East Garfield Park, has had 161 shootings this year (i.e. over double of all of the areas combined from above) yet the population is only 20,567 as of the 2010 Census. In fact, the areas of Austin, West Garfield Park, East Garfield Park, North Lawndale, and Humboldt Park make up 31.2% of the city's shootings this year - total population of these areas? 229,317.

It's also unfair to assume that it's just "everyday people" getting it even in these neighborhoods. River North for example is a big draw for nightlife for people from everywhere - I can remember a few gang related nightlife shootings (not inside a club, but maybe near one) from the last 5 years there. Or the one from Lincoln Square where a guy set up a drug deal to be done inside a car, because the area is quiet with not a lot of crime and therefore would be easy to do the drug deal in. Except one of the guys was crazy and shot two guys while all were inside of the car together.

You can do this for many cities around the world. Rio probably has areas with murder/shooting rates as low of 1.0/100k. The city still has very dangerous areas. The higher the crime rate of the city, the more likely spillover occurs.

Tired of people from Chicago thinking they're the only city that has segregated bad areas where most of the violent crime occurs. Hint: Any city in the US can do this and make their crime rates lower. It means nothing. It's not like criminals are immobile. They can easily take a train into the more nicer areas of the city and commit crime.

Where did anyone say that? Anybody with half a brain who has travelled around the world would know what you're saying. No, doing this is a reaction to people thinking that everywhere in Chicago is bad and there's not many good areas - it's on here to show otherwise that actually, much of the city is not crap and a large chunk of the city has an actually low homicide rate. The high percentage of homicides in the bad areas of Chicago is very skewed. This year, 30% of the city's homicides have occurred in one continuous geographic area where only 8% of the population lives, and another area a handful of miles SE of that with around 30% is slightly higher in population share (around 10%). That's the point - it's not that it's the only city with it (anybody who says or thinks that is an idiot) - it is this notion that Chicago is bad everywhere without many good areas. It's sad because much of the city is pretty normal and actually at least decently, to very nice.

I've lived in Chicago in the near Northside. I've never been a victim of crime, never even seen a serious crime before when I lived there. It was never unsafe to go out at night or go to a park or anything like that during the day.

The city has its issues for sure but yeah, it's entirely detached from the lives and ongoings of normal people in the safer areas of the city.

That said, 600 murders is unacceptable nonetheless and that needs to be worked down in the future. I think most people in Chicago know and realize that.

Crazy that Tulsa has more homicides than Oakland so far this year with a slightly smaller population.

It's crazy that St.Louis could go the rest of the year without recording a single murder and still end up with a higher murder rate than any other major city.
