One reason a lot of Americans like older programmes is that starting (probably) in the 80s our public television stations started to buy the rights to broadcast British programmes in America. I believe it started in Dallas/Ft. Worth, or so I've heard. They started showing Monty Python, Are You Being Served, The Good Life, for instance - all programmes that were fairly recent at that time.

Many of those have become perennial favourites that are broadcast over and over again. The stations found that people were donating to them in part because of those programmes. So they kept it up.

They do add newer programmes as well. There are too many to name in this post. Many have been named in this thread anyway.

The main source of contemporary British programmes in America is very likely BBC America, which is only viewed by those with cable or satellite television. Though that includes a lot of viewers, it still doesn't include everyone.

Of course, there are dvds and tapes on Amazon, but if a programme isn't known to shoppers.... I suppose the way Amazon links to other products: "People who bought X also bought Y" announcements helps to expand the knowledge of what programmes are available. Naturally, even then, most shoppers are more inclined to buy something they are somewhat familiar with.

Has anyone heard of Big Kids? Imogen Stubbs and Duncan Duff are in it.

If you like Ready steady cook you will like "Come Dine With Me". It's something I watched occassionally, but now I absolutely love it, especially the celeb editions. The voice over guy make it even better viewing and right now I considering actually taking part.

There was a comedy called "My Family", but I haven't seen it in a while.

Post Not On Your Nellie

Can someone tell me why Roger Howlett (Gilbert) never spoke in this show? Was it just part of his character? I haven't been able to find anything about him on the net.

Thanks

"Good Neighbors" terribly funny Britcom from the 1980's I believe. Also, my fav in the entire world is "As Time Goes By." I adore Dame Judi Dench and Geoffrey Palmer.

"All Creatures Great & Small".......though I like the books better. I just love the countryside & farmland that they show, and those great cobblestone streets in the villages.
