I always had good luck with Bridger Development. I was in my early 20s and single so I wanted to live somewhere cool, but safe too. Bridger has a bunch on apartments in the Aves area of SLC. I used to live in the Stanton on 2nd Ave. Very old, but neat and historic. Their website is down right now but the number is 801-595-8068. The places are nothing fancy, but most are in neat areas and have a lot of charm. I hope this helps!!
Also, they were easy to get a hold of and fixed stuff right away when needed.

Almost all of Salt Lake City is pretty safe, especially compared to other decent sized cities. There are lots of apartment complexes but many of the newer ones are not down town. Check out Craig's list, Rent.com and Forrent.com. Generally speaking the further east you are the nicer the area. Be a little wary of West Valley.
