Commercial options? You mean like having a major hotel on the beach? A hotel that includes a couple nice eating places at the top level? Or how about a few other beach front eating places? A beach with bike rental and other out door activity rental places? Gift shops? I agree they should build a place like that in Ventura. My thought is that we place it at the end of C street in Ventura right on the beach. Just for fun they should toss in the counties fair grounds and a train station. To top it off place it near some good surf and put in plenty of bike and walking paths, oh and toss in a pier just for fun.

No, don't mean that. You can find some restaurants, gift shops, etc in pretty much every beach city along the California coast...just your typical tourist junk.

As far the fairgrounds, I find them to be a nuance more than anything, they overcrowd the beach area for no good reason. In fact, the last time I stopped in Ventura I couldn't park because some stupid car event. It was terribly loud too....

Probably unlikely see anything like that north of L.A. any time soon. People in Ventura County, and Santa Barbara County, for that matter, are mostly happy not to see the coast become like Long Beach or Santa Monica. Particularly Santa Monica -- chocked with traffic all the time. I'm personally a fan of downtown Long Beach. Belmont Shores is truly beautiful. Would like to see something like downtown Long Beach on a smaller scale in Ox/Ven, but not on the beach. For the beach, I prefer something like McGrath or Ormond -- fully restored nature area, which includes beach along with riparian zones, nesting birds, estuaries, like McGrath Lake, Santa Clara River mouth, etc. My hunch is that I'm in the Ox/Ven majority in my sensibilities about that.

I'm late to this party, just looking around.

Quite honestly, after reading through this thread, why do you even bother to stop in Ventura at all? You have nothing good to say about it.

I go there a few times a year, for some of those "stupid" events and other recreational activities.

Well for one, all the county administration is there. But beyond that, there are a few places I like to stop to eat in Ventura when I'm going north (or returning home) and it has the best beaches within 30 minutes or so.

Oh, and there is golf'n stuff, its actually one of the best mini-golf places in the LA area. Just took some people there a few weeks ago.

And there it is, from user_id himself... the only redeeming qualities of Ventura are:

The Government Center and Golf'n Stuff!

Will definitely add this to the Greatest Hits collection.

IDK, Golf'n Stuff looks pretty awesome. I think me and the kids will be spending some quality time there.

Well, yeah, plus a few of the restaurants are decent. If I'm in Ventura around lunch time I usually get some "street tacos" at Taqueria Cuernavaca.
