Got to go to the soft opening of Redstone. Was very good. Only choice of parts of the menu but the prime rib, Thai salad and short rib were all delicious (and the broccoli side was very tasty). Crab cakes were okay. We were seated indoors, the outside seating wasn't all completed yet.

Hmmm....

This seems like more fodder than anything else. MGM has already signed agreements with the unions, and the law requires that some of the money generated from the casino goes towards infrastructure and safety improvements within a five mile radius of the site. Also they already have a track record of hiring locally and buying from local businesses. Why would that change for PGC? They are also establishing a training facility nearby and working with PGCC to establish vocational tracks for casino related jobs. Now if I can find this out using google and asking questions why can't they? What this group needs to focus on is making sure that PGC businesses are prepared to do business by having the proper certifications, capacity and bonding. They also need to prepare residents seeking jobs for successfully getting a job at a casino. That means assessing their criminal past (if any), and getting their credit together (for those jobs dealing with money). Both the Gaylord and Tanger both tried hiring locally but that became a futile effort. Gaylord had to fire a lot of the initial hires because they were stealing credit card numbers and stealing from guest. Tanger had to rescind their offers to over 50% of their initial hires because they could not pass the background check. I am all for hiring and doing business locally as long as people and businesses are prepared to take advantage of it.

I'm recognizing a trend where 'local hire' in PGC is really code for hiring a national minority while the elected PGC officials neglect their local minorities.

Sounds great. I am going for a friends bday next week. Hopefully the patio will be open by then.

What's the difference between a national minority and a local minority?

Would you have a problem if they ONLY hire local minority and international minority contractors?

I agree with your view point. Race should not matter in this. You get the best people for the job. Of course you want them to look locally but if the reverse was done as far as looking at strictly race, then racism would be screamed out. The double standard of racism has to stop with situations like this. The things that happened in the past generation should not give people a sense of entitlement to walk over others. Everybody should have a fair opportunity and the best people, regardless of race should get the jobs. These leaders do not reflect a county that is open to diversity, which is going to be key in order for the county to attract more higher income families.

I actually don't have a problem with set aside programs because there is still a large gap in this area that is skewed against MBEs, Women Owned, Veteran, and SBEs. Working in this space I see the imbalances all the time. However I do feel that if a door is provided that business or individual must be prepared to perform exceptionally. Contrary to media and general perception, there are still a disproportionate number of barriers for small and minority business and their need to be exceptions to ensure a more balanced playing field.
