Looks very beautiful! A little different from what I was imaging as well but no complaints on my part. It really does look like a massive cruise ship or ark that's both neo-futuristic yet classically monumental. Can't wait for the interior renderings! And I'm still curious on what big-chef names MGM is planning for us as well as the high-end luxury boutiques (I remember reading an article stating that among the new luxury stores will be a Louis Vuitton and Fendi). The fountain is definitely going to be one of the best assets for the casino/resort!

Default Interview With Murren

Great interview with MGM CEO Murren. He touched on two interesting points. One point that I stressed back when the referendum vote took place.

Quote:
In the video rendering it appears to be at a distance from National Harbor complex itself. Is that just the rendering, or will it be that far from National Harbor?

That’s what it will be like. It is a 22-acre site. It’s part of the broader campus of National Harbor, but it’s certainly not adjacent to it. You will drive off to the left before you get to any element of National Harbor as it exists today. That was important to us. We didn’t want to add to the traffic of National Harbor. The views of the Mall and monuments are spectacular from this elevated site. We want to create a trolley system that will easily allow folks to experience National Harbor.
Will you look at that? Forward thinking. Now, he did say they wanted to create a trolley system. Stopped short of saying who will pay for it. lol But, at least he's thinking ahead.

What does a gambler want and expect from a 21st-century casino?

There’s a major distinction between convenience gambling and resort visitation. [Convenience gambling] is about service, comfort levels, and proximity. The international resort is a very different business model—different design, different objectives. We try to attract an international and national customer. They travel around the world. They are very refined. They are very demanding and expect the best of the best.
Boom! This is much different than Hollywood Casinos by Penn National and Parx. MGM is thinking nationally and internationally, as seen by their hard work at the architecture. This was never going to be a parlor room with slots and cheap liquor. I think some people assumed that it would be.

You're right that is forward thinking. I wonder if it will just be within the confines of the Harbor or extend to one of the metro stations. Would it only be for Harbor patrons or could it also supplement commuters. I can see them contributing to the initial cost or do the public-private partnership that the state is pushing. Remember that the 5 M a year for the first 5 to 10 years is supposed to go to infrastructure. That could contribute.

Big time.....The Hollywood proposal is pretty bland and in all honest I don't trust their intent. My thought is that they are only trying to is make sure they recapture what they are loosing in WV. Parx is cool but this will be there second casino...I don't think they have the experience to play in a market other than local/regional at the moment.

Quick Commercial break......three more stores have been added to the Tanger line-up: ELIE TAHARI
Charlotte Russe Outlet and Diane von Furstenberg. I am not familiar with them so I am not sure how they rank in terms of upscale etc. Can anyone provide some insight on their calibur?

Now this is something that I can appreciate. Focusing hiring in the county..

Quote:
During the unveiling, Murren said MGM will uphold its promise to bring international revenue and high-paying jobs to Prince George’s County if selected to build the resort.

Murren said the resort will create about 2,000 construction jobs and more than 4,000 resort jobs with about 400 different categories, and cost more than $800 million to build. He said the emphasis on hiring will be in Prince George’s County.

Here goes the thing I am wondering. How cohesive will National Harbor be with the casino? I mean they were discussing possible high-end retail at the casino, but what does that mean for the shops currently at National Harbor? Also how do they plan on supporting the MGM hotel and the conference center so that they can both co-exist.

If what they are offering is truly high end (some of the retailers they mentioned early in the process were Fendi, Louis Vutton, and some other brands that I would pay full price for lol) then that is a different price point from what is offered by other shops at the national harbor. I don't see the average consumer buying in that class as often as say someone buying something from South Moon. I think that the existing shops will be impacted more by Tanger than any upscale shops offered at MGM.

I assume that has been taken into consideration because Gaylord/Marriot was one of the main hotels backing them coming to the National Harbor. From what I understand MGM will have meeting spaces but not conference space. That places them into another categories in terms of what groups they would attract. I also think that MGM would benefit the other hotels because they would offer amenities that guests from other hotels can attend without having to be guests at MGM. The other thing to consider is that MGM will only have 500 rooms at best compared to Gaylord's 2000 so that limits the number of large groups MGM would handle vs the Gaylord. That said, I think they could co-exist. I think the bigger challenge will be MGM with other hotels both on and off property. More so off property since, in my opinion, the other NH hotels, target a specific market with minimal overlap.

Seems to be alot more smoke in the air about a metro coming to National Harbor, I wonder if MGM has made Petterson rethink his stance on a metro...of course it would be from the yellow not the green. Where would the metro go?

I know in recent years NH has been pushing for metro to come out there but unfortunately its not as simple as making a business case for it. Remember NOVA was lobbying for the silver line for about 30 years before it broke ground. The bigger question is where is it on the priority list for WMATA, the state of MD, and the state of VA since they would be footing the bill for it. If it was a choice between the two yellow would definitely come before green. If for no other reason access to the airport is easier off the yellow line. As for where it would go that is a good question. I'm thinking an underground station would be the best route at this point. Then dig a tunnel(s) to MGM or one of the travel centers, or convert that kiss and ride to a station and have a pedestrian tunnel to go under OHR.
