Hi... my family and I will be moving to the area in about a month and a half and are having a tough time finding a place to live. One of the areas that I am gravitating towards is Port Ludlow.

The impression that I get is that Port Ludlow is a more of a retirement community than anything else. My question is would a family with two young children fit into that area?

Thanks for your help!

It's a nice area, but the median resident age is 61. Your kids probably won't have a lot of other kids to play with in the area.

Very cool place, but it would be hard to find activities for the kids with population so old and less than 2,000 total. Have you looked at Port Townsend? Still not a lot of kids but many more than P.L.

It appears from census data that about 1 in 10 households have kids in Port Ludlow, 1 in 4 in Port Townsend, about 1 in 3 in Port Hadlock / Chimacum, Poulsbo and Kingston.

Like Sequim and Port Angeles, these are all areas with few kids, because they are peaceful and scenic areas that retirees like, and there are no jobs. Poulsbo and Bainbridge Island are a short drive and ferry ride from Seattle, so they attract more people with kids. Many of my co-workers take the ferry to work in Seattle daily. Costs a bit, but they think it's worth it.

When we visited WA in August we were at the pool in a hotel in Vancouver and when I mentioned to a lady there I was looking somewhere between Port Ludlow (I thought cause it was closer to Seattle) to Port Angeles she told me that most younger people will not care for Port Ludlow. I am 36 with kids ranging from 5-18 and she was in her 60s. She said they used to live there and that life is geared around the resort. Its for the older and the well-heeled. This was just her opinion of course.

I think the best answer to your question is, it depends... It depends on what lifestyle you want for you and your children. Port Ludlow is divided somewhat into an older neigbrohood (North Bay) and a newer one (South Bay). The North Bay area has a growing population of families (probably because the housing stock is older and less expensive). If you enjoy boating and the outdoors and love a rural lifestyle, I would argue Port Ludlow is a place to check out and not just discount because of its master planned resort conotation. If you are in the area, check it out and decide for yourself. You can also get a feel for the community by going to www.portludlowtoday.com and checking out the community website.

We will be moving from Indiana to Port ludlow in two weeks. Just wondering if you ended up moving to Port Ludlow? If so, do you like it?
