So, I am wanting to move to Mt Vernon WA from Lynden WA. There is a job opportunity for me there. If anyone knows Lynden, they know it is small and not many jobs, even Bellingham does not have much. I want to know two things (from those who have lived in Mt Vernon)

1. Is it cheaper to live in Mt Vernon versus Bellingham or Lynden?
2. Does Mt Vernon get LESS rain then Bellingham or Lynden?

I understand the Pacific NW gets lots of rain, I have lived here for 4 years. I am just wanting to know if Mt Vernon gets LESS Thanks!

You will find Mt. Vernon cheaper for rent and home buying. Rainfall in Mt. Vernon is about 2" a year less than Bellingham (WHOOPIE!) I don't know about Lynden.

I agree with Hemlock140.

Mt. Vernon also has a slightly lower sales tax at 8.2 as opposed to Lyden's 8.5 ...not a big deal at all or "Whoopie!."

Here are the exact comparisons as far as precipitation goes coming from one of my favorite weather sites, the Office of the Washington State Climatologists:

Bellingham (click here) ...35.25 inches Average Total Precipitation

Mt. Vernon (click here) ...32.37 inches Average Total Precipitaion

Clearbrook (click here) ...46.71 inches Average Total Precipitation

Clearbrook is about 8-miles northeast of Lynden towards Sumas.

So, Mt. Vernon will be very slightly less expensive than Lynden and it will have substantially* less precipitation than Lynden.

ETA: *I'm not even sure if you can really call it "substantially" more or not as that difference seems a little odd to me.

Actually, Lynden gets a lot more rain than Bellingham. According to Moderator cut: link removed, linking to competitor sites is not allowed, Lynden averages 62 inches a year, nearly double Mount Vernon's 33 per year. I am guessing that is due to Lynden being near the mountains, unless Weather.com is inaccurate, which is always possible. Moderator cut: link removed, linking to competitor sites is not allowedstates Lynden averages 46 inches of rain per year; maybe that's closer to the truth. Either way, it will be drier in Mount Vernon.

Yes, that's why I kind of went back to see if I was reading the statistics correctly pertaining to the precipitation for Clearbrook as the OWSC site didn't give stats for Lynden itself. Clearbrook is a few miles further east than Lynden. The reason I like to take the stats from the OWSC site is that they are atmospheric scientists associated with the U of W. But you're right, no matter, Mt. Vernon is going to have less rain than Lynden.
