The smoke is a problem, yes, but it's for only a short time, and the rest of the year is great. I love the cool, rainy months, am glad we don't get lots of snow that sticks around, and that the summers are, for the most part, generally splendid.

And where would I go? Every place has downsides, and there are a lot of factors (humidity, extremely high or low temps for weeks/months on end, bugs, poisonous snakes, tornadoes, hurricanes, etc.) I don't ever want to deal with. I figure if a place is great most of the time, I can accept the brief episodes when it's crap. It's hot and smoky? Well, the rain and cool temps will return before long and things will be okay again. So no, I'm not moving because of the smoke, any more than I am because of the occasional heat wave. I still live in one of the best places on earth, as far as I'm concerned.

Same here- maybe it was the same winter. We were out two weeks in a rural area with power lines down everywhere. Even in town they lost power.

Had family without power for quite a while after this.

I don't know if I'd hold up the Texas power grid as an example!
I never even heard of a "derecho" until last year. I mean, we'd get storms... tornado-producing storms... but this seems to be a storm of a much, much larger scale. Like a hurricane or tropical storm.

It's high velocity straight line winds, that unlike a tornado can last a long time and inflict more damage.
Check out this video as an example.
