Got to 42C / 108F today under clear skies. 41C / 105F in Melbourne.

Line of storms forming to the west and moving this way.... might even get a midnight light show

Supposed to be hot tonight for the fireworks,

then another 40C / 104F day tomorrow (NYD)

For crying out loud, even during a La Nina you get an abundance of 40+ C days while we're looking at another fortnight of 18 - 21 C highs.

Not quite, this is our first real spell of heat. Until yesterday the highest temp this summer was a mere 33C, when in any normal year we'd hit 40C in November. December has been mostly mid-high 20's, no real heat and one of our coldest decembers on record. was still sunny though with 11.1 hours per day. Sunniest I can find from stations that have sunshine recorders for the entire country! Only competition would be alice springs and parts of NW western Aus and the Pilbara, but those stations have no sunshine recorders, but one can estimate using the 9am and 3pm cloud cover values.

Some heavy convective cloud developing, a few drops of rain and temp dropped to 31C / 87F just before

Now back up to 35C / 95F at 10:30pm - with lightning flashes becoming more frequent

Went out to watch the fireworks, and, well, it was a bloody sticky new years celebration (again).... some short sharp showers with a bit of lightning just before midnight dropped just enough rain to soak the ground, (0.6mm at the airport) slamming the humidity right up... temp was on about 32C / 89F at midnight, and still hovering around that now just before 1am. Bit of sweat around the joint that's for sure - that bit of rain didn't cool anything off the slightest bit, just gave us humidity in addition to the heat lol!!!

I remember a couple of years ago (2007-08 i think it was) they actually bought in water trucks to cool people down, and they gave out free water bottles because it was so hot. I think it was about 40C/104F at midnight IIRC.

Still a few lightning flashes around but it's dying off.

Melbourne is on 24-25C / mid 70's F at midnight for their new years celebrations, so nice there not cold but not sultry either, perfect warm party weather down there

EDIT - now 34C / 93F at 1:00AM ...... time for a bourbon + coke or 10
