I'm surprised how late French schedules are, I guess it's just custom.
it certainly plays a large part also.
The main "problem" is that Lunch Break is usually quite long (a traditional thing), which makes for long days (that's why we have longer vacations than you guys I guess ???)
When i lived in Canada, I was surprised at first to see that 9-5 was the norm, it seemed extremely short, but in the end it had some advantages:
- you get up later (and thus with more light)
- you finish earlier, have dinner at 6-6:30 and can go out for the evening from 7 to 10-11, which is pretty cool because you don't necessarily have to get up at 6:30 the next morning like us poor french souls.
The only problem was I had to get used to eat one ton of stuff in the morning because lunch was massively reduced in terms of time / quantity of food eaten.
Different systems, none of which is better than the other IMO, but in the french case, the current timezone setting largely helps make it more livable.

Well what isn't natural? Russia and Canada have EARLIER sunsets again!!!!!
- these are northerly nations, so 4pm sunsets can not be avoided at least in winter

Btw, i always get surprised when the dude who lives in Indonesia talks about he prefers earlier sunsets, but then again, if it is a custom in some place to get up at 5 and go to sleep at 9pm, I can understand the benefit of having a specific timezone / specific times. I mean, I would be weirded out to be at work at 6 AM, but if the whole country does this, i'd probably get used to it and go along with them.
What I meant, is that in a French context it is much better to have the current settings, even though I admit that for places near the UK such as Britanny, 10:30 pm sunsets in summer and 9 am sunrises in winter may be a bit over the top.
For Strasbourg or Lyon, even for Paris, I don't think it is a problem at all
We just can't have several timezones within the same country, and for economical / practical reasons it is also better for us to be on par with the rest of continental Europe, than on par than with our biggest historical enemies, seperated by the narrow sea, that fortunately we sometimes defeat in the 6 nations tournament (not as often as I would like it to, but whatever).

Yea, sickandtiredofthis is right. Most Canadians live at a similar latitude to France. Toronto and Nice are at the same latitude. Calgary and Edmonton are at the latitude of southern England but Vancouver and Paris are similar, populated parts of Canada at higher latitudes is mainly interior western Canada.
3:50pm sunsets in December are just so depressing.. I know we only have a little bit of daylight to play with in winter, but personally I prefer later sunsets over early sunrises.

Let me just say firstly that your on gmt 1 now. I think that perhaps England should move to that timezone amd leave the rest of us alone. I definitely always notice a massive difference between here and there even in winter.
For example, today, the difference is 1 hour. In the summer it will be an 1 hour and 10. Its very noticeble trust me.. Let me say though that 10pm sunset is not natural for your latitude.
For 50N the normal sunset is 8:15 and for 55N is 9pm.

Well if you set your clocks later, you can get the same time unnaturally.

I meant stay on GMT +1 year round and add an extra hour for BST. Either way, our clocks should change earlier in March for sure, so much wasted daylight at the moment in the morning.
8:15 is far too early sunset for my liking for summer. 9:20 seems about right for me, but I would rather have 10:20 so as to not waste daylight before 5am.
