What's scary is the predictions that Phoenix may easily have more 120 + days in future summers. That used to be unheard of here, but that might be a result of the urban heat island effect. Our coldest winter temperatures seldom drop below 40 degrees anymore ... although we did get down to 29 degrees in January of this year. That's a rarity these days.
it snowed over here in mesa in winter 2006-2007. stuck real good down on stapley drive from what i heard. also we got that like 2 week winter period where its below freezing in the morning

Its a bit difficult to give solid figures for english cities, as there doesnt seem to be any daily almanac available for individual locations (online at least) and the exact siting of weather stations seems to change every so often. Cambridge seems to have the most weather data around here...

Record High; 37.5c / 99.5f 10th August 2003

Met Office: August 2003 hot spell

Record Low; -17.8c / 0f 8th December 1879

TORRO - British Weather Extremes: Daily Minimum Temperatures

I suspect the actual record low may be a couple of degrees lower as thats a national almanac, and other locations probably show up on individual days, although only -17.2c / 1f was the lowest recorded during the 30-year mean period.

My record high in central FL was 103° in June of 1956 and the record low was 18° in Dec. of 1962. I remember lighting smudge pots in the orange groves in 62 during that freeze. The temp in the lower lying area where the grove was located was down to 17°.
