It's purely architecture and also to keep the heat out. It actually works better to keep the heat out than keeping your window open, as most of us Brits tend to do..

Some pictures this evening from about 8 to 9 PM (sunset time/ blue hour), when i took a little evening stroll in with my camera.





Last picture was taken quite near the city center btw.

Really? They are not iron bars. Those are roller shutters. Installed not for security reasons. Very common and popular in Europe. I saw them on windows that are hard to access from outside.

European houses? It depends on the country. Places that have cool summers, like the British Isles, the Netherlands, Denmark... don't have them. Southern and central Europe, including most of Germany, has them.
