It's an okay tourist destination, but it's not a great place to live in my opinion.
Elaborate. I've heard New York being described as a whole manner of things - but soulless? Not even once.

Cities are simply the centre of all things interesting - everything goes on there. You just don't get the same level of experience or exposure to culture as you do in a 4-bedroom suburban house in Southampton, Long Island. I would dare say that city dwellers simply live a more interesting and fulfilling life - and have a wide range of different people surrounding them on a daily basis so have an appreciation for things well outside their 'comfort zone', so to speak.

This disdain for urbanity is really a very uniquely American thing that a lot of us in Europe cannot relate to at all.

Not counting the times I've passed through NYC on the train on my way to New England (four separate trips both ways - eight times in total), I've been to New York City six times. (Or seven times if you want to count embarking from NYC on a cruise ship and then returning later two separate trips.) October 2014 was the first time I'd been there for longer than a day trip.

I assume owen has been to London, so he's a bit of an idea what a big, crowded city is like; New York City is obviously more extreme but it's a bit of the same thing.
Yeah I wish they'd stop saying that to me.

I actually drove to New York City once.. my cousin lived there for a while, in various locations in the city. On September 29, 2013, I drove to Coney Island in the Brooklyn borough to hang out with him. It was his suggestion. Surprisingly, I did not hit any traffic (that was a Sunday), though there was a big backup going the other direction on the Staten Island Expressway that I saw on my way back.

I had such a busy day today from like 6 AM. Carry and lifting heavy **** until 11 AM (to the point of spraining my wrist). And then drove into Miami 3 different times for deliveries. I'm just getting home right now and I'm exhausted. Probably going to nap now.

On a positive note we had 2 awesome thunderstorms today. Ahhhhh rain.

I didn't mind NYC, but I wouldn't want to live there. I've visited about five times, mainly when I lived in CT. It was pretty cool to see the US Airways plane that landed in the Hudson when I was there in Jan 2009.

It definitely feels like Friday to me. Power outage is over, weekend is coming up. Great feeling.

New York isn't soulless, but most of the city is visually uninteresting to me, outside of Manhattan. The architecture in the urban areas of the "outer boroughs" is usually plain, ugly, or both. There's little color anywhere, the buildings are mostly brown, and the streets are black/grey. The medians rarely feature greenery, and when they do it's usually dead or sick. More could be done to make it look cleaner and more inviting.

I don't have an issue with urbanity (although I prefer low density), but in NYC's case I think it's grossly overdone, I always found smaller cities like Washington and Philadelphia more appealing/inviting.
