That's why the cocky jerks get girls. Even if they're douches, they know what they want. So be firm, have that glimpse in your eye, and be confident (on the outside at least).
You could always go to a bar and find a drunk girl. They usually aren't picky when it comes to who they sleep with, and they will be gone in the morning anyway so it doesn't matter what your personality is like. And such encounters are solely physical anyway.
Or if you're looking for a girlfriend, find an equally shy and reserved girl. I find the cocky douches are good for short-term flings but when it comes to settling down, most girls want someone who is more reliable, mature and responsible above all else, so while the cocky douches are exciting at first, they make poor boyfriends and even worse husbands.
Not that I'm an expert with women for obvious reasons, but this is what I've picked up.
Plus, if you're good looking but shy, girls will definitely notice you, but they won't approach you. They will wait for you to do the approaching.

That's what I said to begin with. Looks alone are not enough.
That's because girls know men will approach them, so they believe they don't have to do anything except sit around and wait for a beautiful man to sweep them off their feet. It's been ingrained in Western culture. Also, a girl who goes after a guy is considered desperate, so it's no wonder they don't do the chasing, when they will be insulted for it.
This is why gender norms suck. If a woman wants to approach a guy, then she should be able to.

Yeah. I met one girl on the street in Helsinki, started talking, and 5 minutes later her tongue was halfway down my throat. We hang around for a while, but eventually after a few weeks it didn't work out.
Sober she was a bit shy, and not very lively company. She liked me, though.
One friend of mine that hadn't had a girlfriend until his 23rd anniversary used to think that gender norms suck. Now that he's found himself a nice gf he likes the sense of accomplishment the whole dating business gave to him.
