Hiking at Avon Park Air Force Range. I was lucky I didn't get blown up by an unexploded ordnance.
Nice set of pics. That's one part of Florida I never visited when I lived there, and I thought I'd seen it all...lol. Were there many other people around due to it being an Air Force base?
I'd never do a hike like that in summer though - I'd not last 5 minutes...lol.

Oak growing at an impressive angle
Interesting trees. What is that hanging down off them? Not sure if that's the blur of the camera or thistle like stuff.
You sure that's oak? Only thing I can think of why it formed like that is because as it was a seedling growing, it was stuck horizontal on the ground (maybe another stick or branch prevented a vertical growth) and just kept growing then finally found sun and strength to start going vertical with new growth..
I automatically thought that may be willow.
Damn I nee a hike! Unfortunately have to wait another month or so for weather to relax and cool. How do you do it in that heat & humidity. ugh
it's forest service road 2870-120 in case anyone's curious. one mile before the trailhead half the road had slid down the cliff; Not an issue for a bicycle, would have been nerve-wrecking on a car. Near the top of Mt. Baldy:
What good is nature? No cow-poo or rednecks in this nature, or really any signs humans in view. 45 air miles from Seattle. looking down Mt. Baldy towards Grey Wolf
On the ridge between Baldy and Grey Wolf looking back to Baldy:
I missed these. WOW!!
Ok, questions..
1. How do you pick the spot to hike or bike? Do you just throw a dart on the map and where ever it lands you go? Or does someone recommend a mountain/area for you? Or what?
2. Did you get to the top of that ridge there? How were the views? Looks like a perfect day with some clouds and clear skies.
3. How heavy is your backpack? I assume you have things in there to survive the length of time away from civilization. Maybe you bring a tent just in case you get injured or don't make it back in time or get lost?
4. Do all the trail heads have trail maps to look at during the trip?
5. Do you ever encounter trouble on your bike like a road or area you aren't supposed to be on? (trespassing or private?)
