You sure that's oak? Only thing I can think of why it formed like that is because as it was a seedling growing, it was stuck horizontal on the ground (maybe another stick or branch prevented a vertical growth) and just kept growing then finally found sun and strength to start going vertical with new growth..

I automatically thought that may be willow.

Damn I nee a hike! Unfortunately have to wait another month or so for weather to relax and cool. How do you do it in that heat & humidity. ugh
I can't believe you don't know what Spanish Moss is...lol. It's everywhere in the coastal south. It starts about a 100 miles from here, but it's pretty much everywhere south of that.

Yeah, the oaks down there are live oaks, and they always grow weird - dunno why. They tend to lose their leaves in late winter, to be followed by immediate re-leafing.

As for the hiking, don't you ever go up to the White Mtns or anything during the summer to get some cool air? If the SE didn't have mountains....let's not go there - summer's bad enough as it is...lol.

Lack of A/C is a good way to get people out in hot weather. How warm do you think the lake was? Our weather isn't hot enough for water to be comfortable, hard to get both: comfortable air temperatures for summers and comfortable water.

California has lots of live oak

Some of us don't know much about the south; but yea Spanish Moss is rather iconic.

We have Spanish moss here, mostly near swampy areas.

I'm bad in guessing the water temperature.
But considering how warm the weather was in the last days i'm guessing 23-24°C.
It's also a small artificial lake, which makes it warm up faster i guess.
