Oh Lord help me, I'm gonna be whining a lot this winter, I think. I made a vow to try to remain positive, no matter what Life throws at me. I have a feeling that "vow" will last about a week, if I'm lucky! We're living on Lake Poygan and I know it's quite a hub of activity for ice fishing and winter sports happy crappy. Would it be wrong to entertain myself by building a snowball catapult? Because I think I might enjoy that.

well, that may be better then hiding in the brush, yelling "TIP-UP" and watching all the ice fishermen scramble to check their nearest holes. OK, maybe not funny to those who do ice fish, just something we'd do to pass time when our dads felt that sitting on a pail in the middle of winter was the best way to fish. Not all of us would agree... so what if we got in trouble for it....

Seems I've been on Poygan (and the other lakes in that chain) bowfishing years ago, was a nice body of water. Maybe if the ice gets thick enough they'll have some ice races, now those were fun back in the day.

OP, to bring this back on point, these past few little chats here just prove that complete strangers from WI can and do carry on friendly conversations regardless of the method chosen...... plenty of good people out there, i'd say far more then the few who can drag a forum in the wrong direction. So if and when you ever find yourself moving here, you will be welcome.

Oh maaaan, I remember yelling, "TIP-UP!" while out ice fishing, too.
Lake Poygan is really quite pretty. The sunsets are incredible. AND I saw an eagle scoop a fish out of the lake the other day. It was very National Geographic. Flew right over my head (and my gaping maw!)

Jess, Ranger is right! You've got friends here already. Get a move on with that moving, willya?

Awww! I'm trying. I have a few interviews here in PA next week. Getting a job here through the winter to save (and to keep the parents happy while I continue to look in WI... they want me to have a 2nd job to earn extra money while looking in WI). I'm really hoping by next summer. Actually, I'm going to say NEXT SUMMER.

Agreed - last winter was the worst of my life. However, I will never believe that any methodology (that we currently have, at least) can predict how "harsh" or "mild" a winter will be months before it even begins.

Au contraire mon frere! Farmer's Almanac predicted a horrid winter again this year & that thing is right like 90% of the time. Along with other resources so yes, I do believe this winter is going to be crap again. I don't know if I can deal with it again this year. Being a walker, winter is the biggest pain in the ass because there are multiple households that do not shovel their sidewalk. Sigh....I need to get myself an awesome pair of winter boots this winter once & for all.

PA had the worst winter as well - it'll be interesting to see what we get this year as well!

Total BS - they claim 80% but never verify, and 3rd parties have found forecasts to be around 50% (i.e., even with a coin flip) or much worse. I've never seen a single instance of proven, long-range forecasting that's much better than pure chance. We simply don't know what this winter will be like.

One of many sites discussing the inaccuracy and false claims of the Farmer's Almanac: Dr. Jeff Masters' WunderBlog : Winter forecast, part III: the Old Farmer's Almanac | Weather Underground

Most postitive claims are similar to how "psychics" and "seers" like Nostradamus somehow get followers - keep it general and open to interpretation.

NOAA predicted it last year. Cheese. Ya are not going to call them flake now are ya?

IMO farmers almanac predictions are more often than not semi accurate. I believe they are using the NOAA data.

With that said.. I will go with NOAA.

You gotta admit Wunderground is pretty out there too (yes I love them for that) but. .. They are wrong when others are right and vice versa..

You are going to have a nice fall then high snow with temps near normal
