Why do they fire their employees for the most trivial things?

The answer to your first question is in the question; because the job is minimum wage. Companies tend to fire their employees over trivial things because minimum wage workers are a dime a dozen and are easily replaceable.

At Target when you're working during your 90 day probation period, it is very easy to be fired, but once you are off probation, you get a few (sometimes many) more chances before serious action is taken. The HR professional told me the reason is because at that point, a team member has invested serious time in the company and they want to give them more opportunities for improvement.

Real reason: they don't want to pay UI.

Interesting. When I worked in retail there were always a select handful that were there the longest, like maybe 5+ years. How are people like that able to hold onto their job so long and not get fired like all the other employees?

The bigger question is how do people live on $7.25 an hr. That was a decent wage back in like 1988.

My first job upon graduation in 1993 paid $7.50 ... can't imagine trying to live on that now even with the little debt that I have.

Minimum wage is $9.04 here in WA.

I would hope that minimum wage workers would have a high turnover because they are finding better jobs and quitting. They are no longer more likely to be fired because they are a dime a dozen, that applies to many of not most jobs now. With this "employer's market" there's no reason to keep anyone that isn't pulling their weight on the job.

I think too often, they have the idea that they aren't getting paid enough to put in any real effort and I believe if you take a job that you have agreed to give it your all at the wage that was discussed. The reason that others in the same job are still there after 5 years is because they have a good work ethic and understand that a day's work is expected for whatever the agreed on salary is. I get so sick of hearing "Well, they really aren't paid that well." when I complain about the job that is being done. Know what? When these people get a job that pays more, they take with them the poor work ethic!

This one is easy - they get fired at the drop of hat because they're disposable chattel - no different than a used piece of tissue paper being tossed into the garbage after use. If a min wage worker is seen as "stealing time" from their boss because they're not focused on their work constantly, then boom, they're gone.

Heck, if I was being paid $7.25 an hour, I'd be willing to show up, punch in, and stare at the wall for 8 hours, and then punch out - that's all the bossman is gonna get out of me at that wage...LOL. I'm not stealing the boss' time, they're stealing from ME, by paying such a sub-standard wage here in these great United States.

Usually they work more than one job on that wage.
