my current job has me stressedand at some timed depressef. not ever really being depressed the past or feeling depressed I am not exactly sure what being depressed is. I do know that for the past 6 months I have been waking up at 1 or 2 in the morning and not being able to go back to sleep. my question is if I were to use my long term disability to take a break and try to figure out what's going on with the job and with meis it wrong to also use that time off to look for another job and would I have to disclose information to potential employer

It sounds like it's time to look for a new job. In order to use your LTD you will have to get certification by a medical provider, it's not like PTO. If you do it, there is no reason to disclose that to any future potential employers, you are still employed while on LTD so there is no gap. Can you get by on the LTD benefit? In most cases it will not be close to what you get on your regular paycheck. Most are at about 50-70% of normal pay.

I once worked at a place where 3 people got full disability retirements because of job-related stress, but that was years ago and it's a lot harder to find cooperative doctors these days.

That's a good thing. It should be harder to qualify for disability. Everyone experiences stress in their lives but it's hardly reason for disability. Gotta love all those commercials on TV where some shyster lawyer is begging people to come to him and he'll get their disability approved. Sorry if I'm unsympathetic but if you don't like your job look for another one, not an easy way out.
